The Rotary Club of Barberton was chartered on February 29,2024. The day the club was chartered was on a Friday so club members had fun speculating on the charter date- deliberate, based on the day of the week, or it just worked out that way.
The meeting was called to order by club president, Hugh McMichael. Happy dollars were collected with the club birthday being the reason for many making their contribution. We welcomed guests: Bob Morehead from the Barberton Gazette, and Summit County Councilwoman, Bethany McKenney.
Bethany McKenney presented a Commendation to our club for our works and our centennial. She also shared news of Summit County Eclipse happenings- April 8, 2024. Club member Todd Sabol shared tips for health and fitness and updated the club about his business. We look forward to having him speak at a future meeting so we can find out more about his business.
Don Patterson from Barberton Parks and Rec. spoke to the club about a disc golf course to be installed at Tuscora Park and sponsorship opportunities for the club. Tammy Simmons spoke to the club regarding the MumFest and the permanent sign Parks and Rec would like to install in the Mum garden area for sponsors. The club presented Don and Tammy with a donation of $500.00
Paula Kallio was presented a donation of $200 towards the Barberton back to school supplies project.
Thank you all who donated and participated in the 2022 Barberton Rotary Golf Outing. We had over 25 teams and enjoyed a beautiful golf course at Turkeyfoot Golf course.
The time is getting close Folks! We need to start to really push to make our Gold Outing at Chippewa Golf Course be a success. This will be our first Fund Raising effort in support of the many activities supported by the Barberton Rotary Club. We need to sign up "Foursomes, gather prizes, and find Sponsors for the full range of sponsorship opportunities. This Golf Outing will be on August 6th, so we are less than two (2) months away. There should be fewer Outings this year because of ... well, you know, so there should be a good demand to get out and play golf with friends. Come One, Come ALL to the incoming President's Party!
The Welcome In Party for our President Elect (new incoming President) Todd Sobal, will be held the evening of Thursday, June 24th starting at 6 PM in the party room at Finny's Sports Pub on Cleveland Massillon Road in Norton. (Right next to Tim's office and Pizza Hut) Plenty of food will be provided by the Club, but buy your own beverages. This would also be a GREAT TIME to bring a potential New Member to introduce them to the fellowship that is Rotary. Come as you are. You can come into the room either through the Pub or through the entrance by Tim's office. But Come prepared to have a great time!
We are almost back in full swing (great segue for out next story on the Golf Outing) with in-person meetings for breakfast. So, this week we are going to have a special treat. It will be a bit interactive with the members, but not too aerobic. Carolyn Rees, well recognized Handwriting Analyst will be a rapid fire course on handwriting. Handwriting Analysis, or Brain Writing is a respected science and mental health tool in most of the world. The USA does lag behind in this area however. If you are there, you may never look at your writing or yourself the same way again. This is a very interesting and FUN FILLED program. You will understand also why she feels that the teaching of Cursive Penmanship which is falling out of favor in the education system is a mistake. Many childhood developmental problems can be solved or lessened with a concentration on handwriting fundamentals of cursive writing.
Barberton, Ohio Nominated for "All-American City" final selection tonight!
Ann Hutchison brought to our attention this morning that Barberton has been nominated for the designation of All-American City. The Final selections will take place this evening. Be aware by GOOGLE-ing how you can perhaps follow the voting in real time.
Next Tuesday morning, June 8th, 2021 at 8:00AM will mark the last Board Meeting of Barberton Rotary under my term as President. And, there will be a number of very interesting topics to discuss.
Yes, we should have the Treasurer Report and Minutes from the last meeting, but in addition I have recently been contacted about filing forms for the A.Z. Baker award program; something I am not totally familiar with. We/I have been given very short notice of the forms but I think it is something we should discuss for the future since I see a couple of patches on our banner for having achieved the requirements.
Importantly, the Club needs to have all of the required information such as membership roster, changes etc. to Rotary International to be properly invoiced, and be eligible for items such as Matching Grants in the future.
Finally, completed details for the Incoming President's Party on June 17th at 6:00 PM at Finney's.
First Clean Up of McCafferty Park in a year without Masks!
An intrepid group of Barberton Rotarians arrived to clean up the Park and found it in relatively good shape. Obviously it had had some use, however the Barberton folks seemed to respect the area and did a fairly good job of cleaning up after themselves. The members if the photo did their diligence and followed up with even more cleaning.
The weather seemed a bit less than friendly, but at nearly 70 degrees and with the drizzle holding off, it turned out to be a pleasant and refreshing morning of activity.

This week on Thursday, April 22 we will play host to Donna Skada representing Summit County Public Health; What a timely program! While I am certain that COVID and vaccines will be a prime topic, there are several other public heath issues in our County. Make it a point to be on hand to listen, learn, and get your questions answered.
The Thursday meeting for April 29 will be our scheduled cleanup of McCafferty Park. "Many hands make for light Work", the saying goes, and for the last two it has been light and full of fellowship and a couple of laughs... finding a real $5 bill, a surprise or two in the woods by the ball field, and our featured musician Don Kaser attempting to play the xylophone with a wooden stick!
Then in three weeks we will host Diane Johnson from the Humane Society. Unfortunately because we will still be on ZOOM, there won't be Fur Buddys to fawn over. But, I would bet there may be some wet noses to see which for many of us is almost as good. Maybe your pet would like to see this program too.
For those member who could not attend the meetings of last week, let me offer up a recap because there were some important events!
1. There we very positive updates on the Club's plans for the Golf Outing scheduled for Friday, August 6th. We were also updated on the plan to once again feature the Mum Fest with our ever-popular food wagon referred to as "Tons of Taters". Also, members are beginning to plan for the Fall event fund raiser, the Revers Raffle, probably in late October. With all of these events, it is certainly hoped that operations will have returned to some form of normalcy.
2. During the Board Meeting as well as the Club Meeting members were asked to search there brains for ideas for new fund raising projects. Dustin Zuravel informed those present about an ongoing fund raiser being used be the Wadsworth Club. They are raising money by offering the service of placing American Flags in the front lawns of folks in the community. They are doing this on National Holidays and we believe on request for special circumstances as required. Dustin has offered to have someone from Wadsworth speak to our club in the near future regarding the potential of the Barberton Club providing such a service for a fee.
3. Todd, Dustin and Bob completed the paperwork necessary to secure the Club's ability to request a district grant request for next year. Everyone was tasked with tabling ideas were to use this grant for the biggest impact in the Greater Barberton area with a project that will benefit the most people.
8 AM the morning of March 23, 2021, ten members of the Barberton Rotary Club began the ritual of Clean Up at McCafferty Park for the new year.

Former Barberton Hi Graduate and Current NFL Player to Speak Thursday, March 18th
Former Barberton Hi Graduate will be the Presenter/Speaker at the Rotary Club of Barberton, ZOOM Meeting, Thursday morning 8:00 AM. John Cominsky the current Defensive End for the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL will be the Club's guest speaker. Drafted by the Falcons in 2019. He was activated on October 30th of 2020 and recorded his first sack against Derek Carr of the Las Vegas Raiders in week 12 during the 43-6 Win. He played football in college at Charleston however the 6ft. 5 in. 286 lb. NFL star was a High School standout here at Barberton.

With the weather moderating, we are thinking about potentially resuming cleanups at McCafferty Park on our regular meeting Day of March 25th, at 8:00 AM. If the weather turns very poor we will cancel the cleanup and make that date a ZOOM Club meeting but if you are physically able, this will be a great opportunity to see each other Mask-to-Mask for the first time in a long time. More news as we get closer to that date.
The Board of Directors for the Barberton Rotary Club met Tuesday morning, March 9th. The most pressing point of business was the approval of the $5,000 necessary to fully fund our Scholarship Program for 2021 for students at the Barberton and Norton High Schools. The Club Board approved taking the Action for the full amount needed to the Foundation Board. (See outcome Below)
Other orders of Business:
Dustin Zuravel was nominated to replace Laura Thomas on the Foundation Board. Dustin accepted the nomination with pride and was unanimously approved.
It was also unanimously approved to once again support the YMCA with a $1,000 gift this year.
The Golf Outing planning is well underway and at this point, you may already have received a "SAVE THE DATE" CARD for the August event at Chippewa Golf course. We have a large and very active committee working on this Club Project and it is hoped that with the "Cabin Fever" among golfers, that this could be a larger than usual turnout.
The Application Packets of the Scholarship Applicants are being reviewed
Shelly Habegger has copied the voluminous applications of students seeking scholarship assistance from the Barberton Rotary Club. She has placed them in the hands of several Club members to review and make recommendations at our regular Club meeting on March 11th, 2021 at 8:00 AM. As one of those chosen, first I am flattered and second, many are deserving. This year we can only help 5 students, but reviewing their applications, I am equally certain they should succeed in finding some needed funding and succeeding in their lives.
After the regularly scheduled Barberton Rotary Club Board meeting on Tuesday, the Foundation Board met to discuss and determine the amounts and sources of the funds needed to fulfill our obligations to the 4-Way test and Scholarship program winners/recipients.
It was determined that their is sufficient current funds available to cover the costs of these programs as well as our support of the YMCA support this year.
Dustin Zuravel, Elected to Barberton Rotary Foundation Board
After the regular Board Meeting on Tuesday, March 9th, Dustin was nominated for and elected to the Foundation Board. Dustin is also our newly elected President Elect for the 2021-22 Administrativie year.
Next week the Barberton Rotary Club will experience a FIRST! The high school students participating in the 4 Way Speech contest, utilizing the precepts of Rotary's 4 Way Test, will be presenting to our Club VIRTUALLY!
As with past year's, it is a chance to observe the next generation's understanding of what Rotary's 4 Way Test means to them. The winners of these local Club presentation will go on to the District event and could culminate into national recognition. Please be there to offer your support to our students.
Requirements Completed for District and Global Grant possibilities
Both Shelly and I have attended the District 6630 Grant Seminar Zoom meetings as of this writing. What this means is that the Barberton Rotary Club has completed the first important step in having the ability to obtain matching funds from the District and International for projects; such as the Sensory Room at the school.
Now we must focus on a project and determine how to raise the funds required. Also, we must determine if the proper amount of contributions have been made to the RI Fund ($40/member as of July 1, 2020) has been achieved or will be by June 29, 2021. If so, let's find a great project!
Weekly Recap of the Meeting of Feb. 18 & Invitation to the Feb. 25th Meeting
Last weeks presentation by Justice Pat DeWine of the Ohio Supreme Court was very interesting and insightful. It is h0ped that most of the members had their questions answered.
Now, to look ahead to this week, things will be a little more on the LITer (spelling intentional)! The context of the presentation will be from the Ignite Brewing Company. I hope we get some sort of "virtual" tour even if we can't really experience a virtual taste. It is hoped that in the not-to-distant-future, we can experience a Barberton Rotary Social Nite Out at this Barberton Landmark! Please come to this week's meeting and experience the fun, virtually.
It is well known that most of our Club meetings have had Speakers/Presenter with great and inspiring topics. This week is going to be another great one!
Justice Pat DeWine from the Ohio Supreme Court will be our guest speaker, so have your ears and questions ready. Also, I believe we will also be playing host to several members from other Rotary Clubs around Ohio. They are very welcome, as I know we are usually welcome to their ZOOM meetings.
Let's give Justice DeWine a warm welcome. I personally hope that Bruce May will do the Honors of an introduction on behalf of the Barberton Rotary Club.

A Tribute to Akron Rotary's Chili Open & Rhobert "The Rhino's" Chili Recipe
Without a doubt, one of the highest profile Rotary Events of the year in this area is Akron Rotary's Chili Open Golf Tournament. The funds raised through these efforts are ear-marked to support the Children's Camp on Rex Lake. The facilities at the camp are used for Rotary functions of all types including some from the District level. Many of Barberton Rotary's member are and have been involved in this remarkable fundraiser, and will continued to to support the event this year at this weekend's 2021 tee off.
There Chili may be famous or infamous on its own, however you can make your own chili at home while channeling the golfers on the Fairways and ?Greens?!
Here is the Best Chili Recipe! I have created it through Trial & /Error over 50 years of Chili Cookery: Rhobert's Rhino Chili ...
INGREDIENTS:
5-6 LBS Ground Turkey (or Rhino meat if you can catch one locally)
4 Cups chopped onions
1 Cup Chopped celery
2 Tbs minced garlic
4 tsp Kosher salt
1-1/2 tsp fresh ground black pepper
1/4 cup ground Hungarian Sweet Pepper (Paprika)
1/4 cup ground Hungarian Hot Pepper (Paprika)
3 Shacks Red pepper flakes
Ground Red Pepper (cayenne) to taste (2 tsp is pretty hot)
3/4 cup Chili Powder (fresh is by far the best)
2 Tbs ground cumin
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 Tbs ground rosemary
1-1/2 Tbs ground basil
6 small bay leaves
2 28-oz cans Diced tomatoes
2 28-oz cans Tomato Puree
1 28-oz can Tomato Sauce
1 6-oz can Tomato Past
1 to 2 15-oz cans Red Kidney beans
PREPARE:
Brown the turkey and transfer the browned turkey to a large stock pot.
Add onions, celery, garlic and stir well.
Add all the spices and stir well.
Add all the Tomatoes and tomato paste and stir well.
Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
Taste Test - may need up to 1/4 cup of sugar or maple syrup to reduce acidity.
Continue simmering, stirring occasionally until vegetables are cooked.
Add kidney beans last of warm.
SERVE... better yet, wait until tomorrow!
Yields 6+ quarts...Freezes very well!
A Tribute to Akron Rotary's Chili Open & Chili
Barberton Rotary Club has no desire or intention of detracting from the beloved Chili Open run by Akron Rotary; in fact a few of our members gladly participate! However, since our Annual Golf Outing was Scrubbed last year, we are looking ahead to have this fellowship building-Fund Raiser for sure in 2021. After more than a little discussion we determined to look at moving the event normally held on the first Friday of June (National Donut Day) to a date in the range of August 1st. to October 1st. take advantage of the best possible weather forecasts. While no one can predict the environment that far out, we certainly don't want to take that exciting element of possibilities away from the Chili Open. I have already spoken with Denny Liddle and he has graciously offered to take the lad and contact the other members who are experts at putting this event on (in the past at least) and secure, if possible, proper dates and locations suitable for our event.
Barberton Rotary is already preparing for the 4-Way Speech Contest!
Our tireless and dedicated member, Shelly Habegger, is already on top of establishing the groundwork required to deliver a a very interesting group of students from the surrounding school systems including Barberton, Norton, and (I believe...Coventry). She has already gathered the necessary information, and initiated the required processes for delivering the Program though the Club and sending our winner on to the District competition. Shelly, on behalf of the entire Barberton Club, we can not Thank You enough! BTW, Shelly will keep us informed of the dates and we will set up the ZOOM meeting accordingly.
The Barberton Rotary Board votes to increase RI Foundation contribution level
Last year the levels of aggregate funding per capita was $35. It was determined in conferences as early as 2020, that the level of giving necessary to establish a club's viability to receive matching funds for Grants, would require clubs to show a $40/member contribution to the RI Foundation. For the Barberton Club that means increasing the quarterly amount billed to $10 from $8.75. This will make us eligible for Challenge Grant money this year. All felt this could be a small price to pay to receive in return, many fold return of value.

New Year; New Challenges and Opportunities for Barberton Rotary
As the Barberton Rotary Club President for the 2020-21 Administrative year, projects, fund-raisers and opportunities are already beginning to come alive. Todd Sobel, our President Elect, is connecting with the District on training to be ready to lead the Club in the coming administrative year of 2021-22. His excitement as a newer member and youthful drive should mean that the Club grows and prospers in innovative ways.
We are already planning for attendance at the Grant Seminars for both the District and International Challenge Grants. We are not certain what we will want or need to fund this round, but we are planning to have our hat-in-the-ring for whatever monies will be available and utilize them to benefit the Greater Barberton area.
While as a Club, I may not have the honor and pleasure of leading a face-to-face meeting, we will still do our best to be of important value to the Community of Barberton and the surrounding area.
2021 is Finally here; Will it be everything we Wished for?
The Christmas and Holiday Seasons are over, for the most part. The Elections are decided (for the most part), and its time to begin breaking many of our New Year's Resolutions before we really get them started.
While our Rotary Year runs until June 30th, as humans (for the most part) we measure our lives on the Calendar Year. So, here we are, just a few days into the Unknown Future of what is 2021. There's much hope! The COVID virus(s) seem to have been conquered, but it looks like it will not be until the 3rd quarter of the year before our lives start trending toward normalcy.
The future is still bright for the Rotary Club of Barberton! In our efforts to make great positive impacts in the community, we have structured our activities and particularly our finances so that we may continue this positive contributions. Just as we did last year, we have committed the Club to continue funding long-term projects and continuing physical activities such as McCafferty Park Clean Up, etc. as in the past. We also are beginning the search for new funding projects and enhancing older projects with new ideas. If 2020 has taught us anything, it is to Be Prepared for the Worst but Expect the Best!
Even though the money came in last week, the Club received a donation from the Del Duca Family Foundation in the name of Barb Kirbawy. During its meeting NEXT Tuesday the Board of Trustees will make a determination where to best utilize these funds. We certainly will give primacy to finding the best way to assist the Barberton Public Library; Ann's input will be very beneficial. In addition we will continue to project new dates for events such as the Golf Outing, Tons of Taters, Reverse Raffle, and perhaps a new project or two. But, let's all remember that this year is going to be a tremendous set of challenges for us all.
To those Challenges, we need to double our efforts to secure new members, develop a higher profile on-line presence, and invite interesting, educational, and entertaining program speakers to our Zoom meetings as well as future in- person meetings and events. WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY AND TOOLS TO CREATE OUR OWN FUTURE...LET'S GO!
Our FIRST Program of 2021 will begin those processes!
Cheryl Warren, Akron Rotary member and District Guru for all things ClubRunner related and most things Web site related will be here via ZOOM to discuss the use of CR to have our club run better as well as keep the members better in touch with the Club and other members. I would say that your presence at this first meeting of the year might be critical to making this a better Club Year for all. She will gladly answer questions regarding why your profile on CR is important, why the Barberton Rotary Club needs its own web site outside of CR, and how YOU can become more computer literate with very little stress and strain. And so, 2021 Begins....
2021 is Finally here; Will it be everything we wished for?
The board voted to cancel the 2020 Golf Outing due to the dangers surrounding the spread of the COVID-19 virus pandemic. A letter of cancellation was prepared to be sent out to club members to be forwarded to 4somes and sponsors. The golf course has been notified.
Our second virtual club meeting was held via Zoom.
We talked this morning about how to help the community and the club is asking our club foundation to make some donations. The enjoyment of the Barbertonopoly games that were passed out with the Birdie Bags prompted a discussion of games to be donated with the next food distribution- Shelly indicated distributions are weekly now. She will get numbers regarding the number of families distribution is going to so we can get an idea of amount of games. With regards to monetary donations a suggestion was made to donate to BACM would with a request to target Barberton as BACM can get the most food for the buck from the food bank.
Our BD meeting has been set up via Zoom for next Tuesday, April 14 and note it will be at 8am, the Thurs meeting will also be at 8. An email will be sent with the meeting join info to all club members. Also, the board meeting join info will be sent out along with the reports to all club members. The board meetings are open to all, with voting reserved for board members.
There was a Birdie Bag Packing by the Barberton City School District on Monday, April 6. Rick Fisher had a great idea regarding the remainder of our Barbertonopoly games- include them as gifts with the Birdie Bags. Below is his report:
The game distribution went very well. The school was very well organized with two lines of vehicles being processed simultaneously. There were a significant number of school staff members present, all donning protective masks and gloves. Since staffing was more than adequate and the process most efficient, I did not stay. I asked Jeff and Shellie to mention that the games were provided courtesy of Barberton Rotary. Jeff sent a note mentioning that the recipients were very pleased our donation. I had arrived early and spoke with several of parents and grandparents who had also arrived early. The Birdie Bags program is very important to their family. They were all also very upbeat. And interestingly, professed a love for Barberton, both the city and the school system. Makes one proud to be a member of the Barberton Rotary Club, especially during these most difficult times. We made a difference today!
The club had its first meeting via Zoom. Don ran the meeting- there was no coin toss. We all shared news of how we were doing. We discussed the golf outing, if it can go on, etc. The golf outing will be a topic at the next board meeting. We will have a virtual board meeting, and everyone is welcome to attend. The zoom meeting number, web link and phone numbers to use to join the meeting will be sent out via email for both the board meeting and the next weekly meeting.
Don and Ruth made the scholarship determinations- a total of 5: Manchester -academic, Norton and Barberton will each have a Vocational and Academic. We unfortunately will not be able to have our 4 Cities Compact Awards breakfast. The recipients will be notified of their awards.
Don, Ruth and Bob Rees attended a meeting of our South Summit Rotary Cluster with members of Akron, Green and Medina Sunrise. One of the items discussed was what the other clubs were doing to help out in their community. Several clubs were going out and volunteering, some were promoting donation.
Ruth won the coin toss to run the meeting. There was alot of meeting happiness as Jim Sawin was in attendance at the meeting and did the invocation. No one won the 50/50 pot, 16 cards remain in the deck and $485 was the prize to be won.
Our guest was Justin Chesnik from ODOT4. Todd Sabol was thanked as our March greater. Vic brought the golf outing entry and sponsorship forms as well as envelopes and stamps. The club started the meeting labeling, stuffing envelopes. Raffle tickets should be in next week. Critch created a flyer of encouragement to club members to sell raffle tickets! There will be a sign up next week for sponsorship and prize committees.
Next week will be scholarship selection, help will be needed to choose recipients -this will be our meeting. March 26 speaker will be Jim Lechko.

Our speaker was Justin Chesnik. Justin gave updates of current as well as road projects on the horizon in our area. He also passed out some paper Ohio maps.
Don Kaser won the coin toss and ran the meeting. Our guests included: Justin Elder the adviser from MHS and students Owen and Jenna, Tricia Pletcher from NHS and students Aubrigen, Shruti and Emma. Also joining us this morning was Jen Morgan with Barberton City Schools. Our judges for this years contest included: Bob R, Ruth K, Dustin Z, Dave S., Todd S and Vic M. Our contest winner was Shruti, 2nd place =Aubrigen, 3rd=Emma, 4th=Owen , 5th=Jenna.
Shruti will go on to represent our club at the District 6630 Speech Contest to be held on Saturday, April 11.

Our club 4 Way Test Speech Contest will be held next week. We will have a total of 6 students and advisors participating from MHS and NHS . We will be having a buffet for breakfast so this would be a great meeting to invite a prospective Rotarian. Guests were recognized and included Daniel Como, Leslie Powell and Amber McPherson from New Horizon Credit Union.
We received word that Jim Sawin will be returning to work part time at the Lake Anna Y. Jim we look forward to your return at the meetings. Jennifer Sutton shared that the items for the sensory area at the Barberton PreSchool have been received. A date and time have been set for their set up and picture taking-Tuesday, March 10 from 11:15-12:15. Bob Rees has offered to be our photographer. The volunteer sign up was passed around at the morning meeting. Anyone not able to attend the meeting that would like to volunteer let Jennifer know so she can have you added to the list of volunteers.
Women Mean Business-and the club approved submitting a photo and profile of the Women of the Rotary Club of Barberton for the next publication to be done by the Barberton Herald. The deadline is March 11. The photo would be taken after the meeting next week. As possible information to be included Ruth proposed the following: "
The Rotary Club of Barberton helped fund the Limitless Playground at McCafferty Park, and adopted it, we funded items for the sensory area at Barberton Pre School, and joined with the OECC to fund the 3 interpretive signs that will be placed on the Barberton section of the TowPath Trail. Will you help us pack Birdie Bags, and will you share your idea for our next community project?
Rotary is the oldest and the largest of the service clubs, 115 years old, with 1.2 million members worldwide and 35,000 clubs. The Rotary Club of Barberton turned 96 years old on February 13th of this year."
Our speaker was Daniel Como, the Operations Manager for the New Horizons Credit Union.. Daniel has been with NHCU since October. Daniel talked about how a credit union differs from a bank. It is a member owned financial cooperative. He asked for hands of how many club members belonged to CU and we are at about 50%. A CU is similar to a bank but it is member owned and has more minority and female owners. Its local board decides loan rates, products, etc.

We will have 2 schools and 6 students participating in our club level 4 Way Test Speech Contest to be held at our Mar 5 meeting. Manchester HS has a new adviser to replace Marcia White, MHS and NHS will be participating.
Our club needs to send at least 2 people to the upcoming District 6630 Grants Seminars. This is one of the requirements for qualification of a District 6630 matching grant. The seminars will be held this Saturday and next Saturday. Ruth Kaser will send out the locations in a club email.
Kate DeAngelis presented photos of the 3 interpretative signs our club sponsored to be placed on the TowPath Trail. One will be placed at the Fairview Trail head, one at the Magic Mile by the Kiosk, and one will be placed at Lock 1. Kate worked with Sarah Hayes at the BPL. Amber Genet spoke of the time line of the signs, how the project began with the OEC and going forward what will happen. The plan is for the signs to be in place at the beginning of May. Mayor Judge spoke of Barberton what is going on, plans going forward for business and industry and how the Towpath helps with quality of life.

Planned social events were updated, the golf outing was discussed as well as the interpretative signage on the TowPath Trail. The club will be the speaker at next week's meeting as we will discuss the signage to be erected in the Barberton section of the TowPath. Ruth shared that dues for the first quarter of 2020 will be sent out next week. The Rotary minute was ESRAG.org. ESRAG stands for Environmental Sustainability Rotarian Action Group. ESRAG is an International Coalition of young people, Rotarians, and members of the Rotary family taking action to solve climate crisis and make a difference for our planet and our future. Rotary has identified 6 areas of focus that reflect critical humanitarian issue and needs that Rotarians are addressing world wide:
promoting peace
clean water
fighting disease,
saving mothers and children
supporting education
growing local economies.

The Rotary minute was congrats to Rotary for winning the Tournament Volunteer Trophy. The most outstanding display of floral presentation of the Rose Parade Theme. The speakers schedule was passed around as there are some up coming open dates for speakers.The speaker for this meeting was Leslie O'Neal. Leslie works with individuals, companies and associations to attract meetings, conferences and conventions to greater Akron through the Akron/Summit Convention & Visitors Bureau. Leslie indicated she would follow up her presentation by sending links for further information regarding the ASCVB.
Don Kaser won the toss to run the meeting. Guests were welcomed and included spouses Carolyn Rees, Tim Hutchison and Adam Young. Adam is a visiting Rotarian from Washington and is the grandson of Ralph Young. No one won the 50/50 pot, now over $435. Jeff discussed the results of the meeting regarding the Birdie Bag Program. The program in Barberton has been funded by the former CEO of B&W who is now living in Canada. The Barberton program needs about 55K a year. Corporate donations will be sought from local companies as the primary source so the burden of continuing the program is not only on the shoulders of the service clubs. The next bag stuffing will be in January.
Don shared that the email regarding possible club social events to be held in addition to the meetings generated interest. Event champions are being sought. Critch volunteered to be the leader for the Akron Rubber Ducks. Rick Fisher volunteered to lead for the Porthouse Theatre, and Bob Rees volunteered to lead for Finny's Sports Bar.
Vic advised our grant check has been received from the district and will be deposited soon. It is in the amount of $2256.23.

Todd Sabol is the owner of SportsMEDDiscussion, a sports medicine seminar business and traveling, cash-based athletic training service as well as the head athletic trainer at Mogadore High School. Ruth won the coin toss and ran the meeting. Our guest included our speaker- John Reyes the District 6630 Governor. Birthdays were recognized and included Bruce 12/5, and Critch -tomorrow. Critch shared he will be celebrating number 86. Also a Rotary anniversary was recognized- Rick Fisher being a Rotarian for 28 years. Rick shared that when he joined at around 41 years old he was one of the youngest in the club and he appreciated the number of new members joining our club.

The highlights of the recent board meeting were shared:
New members Kate and Brett have been approved and were welcomed as new members. Their induction as new members will be once their new member materials have been received from RI.
To further foster club fun and potential growth we would like to continue the practice of social/gather outside of the club meeting events. The board came up with some suggestions and there will be a further discussion at the next meeting. Also the list will be shared via email to the club along with the pictures of the new sports bar that is located in Tim's building.
Next Weds. Dec 18 is the Magic Singers Holiday concert in the BHS Theatre at 7:30 am. We will be joined by the two Kiwanis clubs. There will be a meeting at 8:30 am with Jeff Ramnytz of our club and Kiwanis regarding the future of the Birdie Bag Program.
Next Thursday, Dec 19, is our last meeting of the calendar year. We will meet at Thano's as usual and will have a breakfast buffet. Club members are encouraged to bring a guest, and/or family. Todd Sabol will be our speaker. Ruth will send out an email for the head count.
Our speaker John Reyes talked about Rotary- we are the oldest, and the largest of the service clubs. He also shared some of Rotary accomplishments and how we have connected to the world.

Guests were welcomed and included: Kallie , the leader of our cub scout pack and her son, Christopher Weigand, Brett Fogle and Kate DeAngelis. We have received applications for membership to Rotary from Brett and Kate.
Don shared the news that our District Grant has been approved. Jennifer Sutton explained how the grant monies are going to be used. Our club would be purchasing items for a sensory area at the Barberton Pre School. Club members will have the opportunity to assemble the items and help set up the area.
No one won the big pot in the 50/50 . Don reminded the club of upcoming events: this coming Friday is the bell ringing at the Barberton Giant Eagle. Also, Wednesday, December 18 we will join the two Kiwanis clubs to see the Magic Singers Holiday Show. It is at 7:30 AM in the Theatre of BHS.

Our speaker was Judge Todd McKenney who spoke about OC Barber. Judge McKenney wondered if this complex man was thankful for his many blessings.

Vic shared the updated progress of the TowPath Trail signage- there will be 3 signs placed in the Barberton section hopefully in the spring. Todd Sabol has started our club Instagram page and will be our club social media person sharing about our club. Kalie with our cub scout pack left us a message that she will be bringing the popcorn our club members ordered to our next meeting on November 21. Speaking of our next meeting- that is our Thanksgiving meeting and it will be a buffet- what a great meeting to bring a prospective Rotarian!
Our speaker was Karen Godt. Karen shared she is the spokes person for their foundation-Hopeforhonduranchildren. Her husband John handles the financial end of the foundation. Honduras is the 2 poorest country in the western hemisphere, 80% of its population lives in poverty, and they also have 80% of the population unemployed. Their foundation focuses on children who migrate to cities from the villages. The children risk violence, drugs, crime, and gangs as the cities also have high unemployment. They have impacted 5546 children since the inception of their foundation. They have training centers as well as schools. They have worked with Rotary Clubs in the US as well as the Honduras to try to improve the facilities for the children. The cost to sponsor a child is $50.

Don shared news of a District wide member contest that came out of the recent conference. Clubs earn points for new members and growth ideas. The winning clubs will receive Paul Harris points. Don reminded the club of the upcoming Board meeting on Nov 12 at the Lake Anna Y at 7:30 AM. Todd Sabol has agreed to be on the board. The Salvation Army Volunteer for Bell Ringing sheet was passed around - we will ring on Dec 6. There is still one slot open.

Our speaker was Elaine Marsh from Summit Metro Parks. Elaine spoke about the Gorge Dam project. She shared some history and background regarding the dam. It was built in 1911, and hydro operation was started in 1917. It never worked well due to the unpredictability of the flow of the Cuyahoga River. There has been alot of planning with regards to the dam removal, including sediment removal. The dam is scheduled to be removed in 2024.

Tim shared an upcoming fund raising event for his club- a chili cook off to be held on November 9. Tim wondered if any of our club members had award winning chili and provided entry information. The Salvation Army Belling volunteer sign up sheet was passed around. We will be ringing the bell on Friday, Dec. 6 at the Barberton Giant Eagle. There are 2 open volunteer spots remaining, one at 2-3, and one at 3-4pm that day.

Don, Bob Rees and Tim Weyer from the Green club attended the Rotary Membership workshop held this past Saturday, in Kent. One item from the workshop was several clubs are wondering about increasing membership and several things are being tried to reach out to new perspective members. Post meeting Tim, Ruth and Todd discussed planning a joint club social outing for membership at a mid point venue.
Our speaker Clarance Bechter shared the story and pictures of his bicycle trip across country. His trip was over 52 nights and it was through a company called Bubba's Pampered Peddlers. Clarance shared the Ohio contingent was the largest of the group.
Ruth Kaser won the coin toss to run today's meeting. Today is World Polio Day. The club is making a donation of $25 to the RI Polio Fund. The meeting was called to order and Critch's answer to the World Polio Day question was the closest to the correct answer. The question: It what year was the US considered to be polio free? Answer 1979.
Guests were recognized and included our speaker, Judge David Fish and from the Boy Scouts Christopher Weinland and Cub Scout Pack 3113 leader Kali. Cub Scout Pack 3113 meets at the Lake Anna Y on Sundays and is pack our club sponsors.
The 50/50 pot is up over $400 and the queen was not selected so, it will be higher next week. Critch passed around the Salvation Army Bell Ringing sign up sheet. We will be ringing the bell at the Barberton Giant Eagle located on 5th St on Friday, December 6. Opportunities to ring the bell remain: one slot from 2-3pm, and 2 slots are open from 3-4 pm.
Judge Todd McKenney introduced our speaker, Judge David Fish. Both shared a day in the life of a judge, their trials and tribulations from ordering restitution for victims to safe and effective places for someone who needs to be away from the general public.

Following breakfast our speakers will be Sup. Jeff, along with Barberton City Schools Treasurer Shawnna Jones who will speak about the Barberton Schools renewal levy. Also speaking will be Kyle McBride - New Boys basketball Coach/Do Your Job & Internship instructor.
This weekend is TOT at MumFest. The sign up sheet has been added as a document in the photo albums on the home page of this website. The sign up sheet was also passed around, beverages, supplies and the tip jar discussed. We will again sell pop and water at the event as well as Barbertonopoly. Tim Brenner will drop off a case of the games and a tote for their storage. The tote will be placed by the beverages and it will be customer obtain game and beverage after paying.
We have received the new member materials for Todd Sobel and Steve Kindel. Their membership induction will be at an upcoming meeting.
The coin was changed to an old silver dollar and Ruth won the toss to run the meeting. Guests included Mike Johnson, the Chief of Conservation for Summit Metro Parks. Jim Sawin shared there were still about 100 tickets outstanding and to please bring tickets and money to our next meeting. Denny Liddle received a request for assistance from Barberton Parks and Rec to help with unloading of mums for the presale on Weds Sept 25, Thurs Sept 26 and Friday Sept 27. Exact times were not included- Denny will get back to the club.
Our speaker was Mike Johnson, his topic was the conservation programs at the Summit Metro Parks. Mike talked about fire-one method of control, bullets-controlling deer. Last year over 100 lbs of meat were donated to the food bank. Mike will return to speak at our club meeting on November 7.

Vic attended a TowPath signage meeting yesterday with Rick Fisher and Amber from BCF. By May 2020 is the goal to have 3-4 interpretative signs erected on the Towpath Trail in the Barberton section. Don gave an update on the Limitless Playground to be erected at McCafferty Park. Ground breaking will be in the spring.
October 3 we will be at Barberton High School to meet the new Boys Basketball Coach -time 730 am with breakfast.
Our speaker was Dr. Mike Hughes from Summa Barberton Hospital. Dr. Hughes shared news of some of the new units at Summa- the HICU -High Intensity Cardiac Unit. He also spoke of the good fit with their new partner Beaumont Hospital.

Our speakers were Captn. Ashley Ferrell and Paula Kallio. Captain Ashley Ferrell spoke of the history and founding of the Salvation Army as well as how they are serving the people in Barberton. Paula Kallio spoke of the Labor Day Festival that will be held at Lake Anna Park on Saturday, August 31. Our club presented Captain Ferrell with a $250 donation to the Labor Day Festival.

The board recommended a donation by our foundation of $250 to the Labor Day Festival, also $250 to BACM. Bruce May called a vote of the foundation members present at the meeting and the donations were approved by the members in attendance.

Ann Hutchinson is our greeter for August, and she was thanked. Our guests included Steve Kindel from US Bank and Justin Chesnic and his assoc from ODOT. Our next board meeting will be on Tuesday, Aug 13 at the Lake Anna YMCA at 7:30. We will meet in the YMCA conference room. There will be a Reverse Raffle planning meeting immediately after the board meeting.
Jim passed out Reverse Raffle Tickets to members in attendance. We will be selling only 125 tickets and are asking each member to sell 5 tickets. Tickets are again $110 a couple and include 2 drink tickets. The event is again at Guys Party Center and will be held October 10th.
Our speaker was Justin Chesnic with ODOT. Justin reviewed the status of current road projects in our area and gave us a packet and a heads up regarding future projects.

Denny advised he will contact Chippewa Golf Club to reserve the first Friday of June for our 2020 golf outing. Jim Sawin shared the tickets for the Reverse Raffle are at the printer, and our first meeting will be after the next Rotary Board meeting. All are welcome to attend the meeting. We will print 125 tickets. The event date is October 10th at Guy's Party Center. Don Kaser shared the club has adopted McCafferty Park. Our club responsibility will be trash pick up and additional sets of eyes on the park. Next weeks meeting we will discuss our first pick up date as well as pass around a sign up sheet to participate. Our District grant for sensory materials for Barberton Preschool has been deemed fundable.
Jim Sawin talked about the Inaugural 2nd Street Walk the Block to be held Thursday, August 1, sponsored by the Lake Anna YMCA. This will be our Service Thursday, and we will meet at the Lake Anna Y at 9am.

My name is Jim Hunt, and I am a past District Governor and member of the Rotary Club of Ohio Pathways (D-6600). Joe Berninger, founder of the Guatemala Literacy Project (GLP), and I are organizing Rotary service trips to Guatemala and we are looking for interested Rotarians.
The GLP is the largest grassroots, multi-club, multi-district effort in the Rotary world not directed by RI itself—the “gold standard” of Rotary projects, according to former RI President Ian Riseley. Over 600 Rotary clubs from 8 countries have participated in the GLP since its inception in 1996. GLP Textbook, Computer, Teacher Training, and Youth Development programs currently serve more than 50,000 impoverished children.
These trips offer a variety of experiences: Some are longer or shorter; some more “hands on”—and all of them give you the opportunity to be a meaningful part of Rotary’s work fighting poverty in Guatemala. Please visit the project’s website for more details.

In reviewing the club website and our club history this little gem was found: The first formal meeting of the group was held in the Peoples Bank Club rooms on Wednesday, February 13th, 1924. U.L. Light, who had been designated as chairman of the organization committee by the Akron Club, presided at the meeting. He outlined the purpose of the meeting and at the conclusion of his talk a formal resolution to apply for charter in the Rotary International was adopted. A nominating committee was appointed resulting in the nomination and election of the following officers: President : U.L. Light V President: H.A. Rudd Sergeant-at Arms: E.S. Longenecker Secretary-Treasurer: W.A. Mills Directors at Large: R.E. Haley, A.O. Austin, H.L. Smallman.
The Rotary Club of Barberton is not the only service club having a 95th anniversary. The Noon Kiwanis is also 95 this year having been chartered in October 1924. Of interest is this excerpt from the club history:” Rotary thru its philosophy of “Service” has taught a greater community responsibility. The first demonstration of the effectiveness of this new interpretation of “Service” was shown during the Community Fund campaign, when thru the efforts of the Rotarians and their co-workers, the Kiwanians, $40,000 was raised for the social and welfare agencies of the city. The campaign was a success because of the workers. The workers were the men who had learned that “He Profits Most Who Serves Best-Service Above Self”.
Oral Health Educator, Kelly Hershberger from Enbracing Futures demonstrates proper brushing techniques via Jim Sawin and chocolate pudding. Executive Director Mark Fairhurst shared the primary purpose of the charity-the orthodontic care program.

From the earliest days of the organization, Rotarians were concerned with promoting high ethical standards in their professional lives. One of the world's most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics its The 4 -Way Test, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy. This 24- word code of ethics for employees to follow in their business and professional lives became the guide for sales, production , advertising and all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the company is credited to this simple philosophy.
In the 4 -Way Test Speech Contest students are challenged to identify a topic they feel passionate about and to adopt a point of view from which they will seek to persuade others. Each part of the Four-Way Test is to be addressed during the speech.
Mrs. Tricia Pletcher, the adviser/coach for the Norton HS team brought Sylvia Downie (1st place winner), and Kristina Nemes (2nd place winner) to compete in our club contest. Sylvia will represent our club at the District 6630 4 Way Test Speech Contest to be held April 6 at Aurora HS.
This morning community service project leads Mattie Tewell and Thomas Brunty presented to Rotary Club of Barberton about this year's DECA community service project where they partnered with Akron Snow Angels. Their goals were to educate the community about their project, collect and donate 500 articles of clothing and raise $700 for Akron Snow Angels. The Barberton DECA chapter raised over 1000 articles of clothing and were able to present founder Erin Victor with a $723 check this morning at our club meeting!
The Rotary Club of Barberton received a Senatorial Citation on behalf of State Senator Vernon Sykes. The Rotary Club of Barberton was recognized for their donation of $5000 to Barberton Parks and Recreation's Limitless Playground project at McCafferty Park.
The Senatorial Citation states "community playgrounds like the McCafferty Park project will serve as an inclusive and special place for thousands of children in our community. It is so important that we continue to empower and uplift children through the power of recreational activity and physical fitness."

Chris reminded board members there will be a meeting next Tuesday at the Lake Anna YMCA at 7:30 am. The $260 in the 50/50 pot will survive another week as the queen of spades was not pulled. Barb K suggested club members bring a box of cereal to next weeks meeting as Judge McKenney and his wife, Counselwoman Bethany McKenney will be our speakers. Barb reminded club members of the cereal war between the Barberton and Stow courts.
Our speaker was Dan Rice, the President and CEO of the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition. Mr. Rice received our club donation of $5000 for interpretive signage on the Barberton section of the TowPath trail. Dan spoke of the progress of the trail and the goal of its completion by the year 2020.

Vic and Jim presented our speaker, Samantha Edgar with our club donation of $5000 towards the Limitless Playground to be built at McCafferty Park. Did you know that about 1 in 6 children ages 3-17 have been diagnosed with at least one developmental disability. Samantha explained the extensive research done for both the contents and location of the playground. It has been in the works for 3 years. Construction is scheduled for summer 2019. There will be a board meeting next Tuesday- November 13 at 7:30 am at the Lake Anna YMCA. Reverse Raffle Co. members are encouraged to attend as there will be an event wrap up as part of the meeting.
We will again be ringing the bell for the Salvation Army date and location to be determined. Critch will head up the event.
The club purchased a 4 Way Test Banner for the new Rotary Club in Green. Don and Ruth Kaser will travel to make the delivery at their Dec 18th meeting.

Jim reported on the Reverse Raffle and Silent Auction. Jim advised that all 135 tickets have been disbursed to club members. Now we need to get the money and stubs returned on a timely manner as we need to get the meal count to Guy's by October 18. Our next focus is on Silent Auction Baskets. Our event is in 3 weeks. The next Reverse Raffle meeting is next Weds, Oct 10 at the Lake Anna Y at 7:30. The event volunteer list was passed around.
Happy Dollars were gathered and the 50/50 played. The $200 pot lived another day as Ruth did not draw the Queen. The invoices for our 4th Quarter dues will be going out within the next few days.
Our speaker was Dr. Ken Polke. Ken shared how he conquered adversities growing up in the Collinwood neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio.

Mayor Judge talked about the Barberton Mobile Community Access & Response Center. The used RV was purchased with HUD funds with a final cost of around 40K. Its purpose is to remove barriers to provide services to the residents of Barberton. It has been used for mobile health fairs, for screenings, a mobile office for distribution of health and healthy living items. Mayor Judge talked about using it as a mobile dental center, information distribution, FEMA temporary office following a natural disaster. The RV is outfitted with WI Fi making it useful as a mobile office. It has walls that can be utilized for privacy for health screenings. It also has a working kitchen for healthy eating demo's. Bid won the day but not the pot. Reports were given-we reviewed the Corn Roast on Saturday, Sept 1. Also, the sign up list was passed around for TOT during MumFest weekend. There are still some volunteer opportunities for this event. Jim gave an update on the Reverse Raffle: Bid got kudos for offering up the first basket for the Silent Auction. Judge McKenney got kudos for taking the most tickets (10) in the first distribution round. As a reminder, each club member is asked to be responsible for the sale of 4 tickets and bringing 2 baskets for the Silent Auction.
Our speaker Chuck Hurst is a member of Akron SCORE. He indicated the Akron chapter was established in 1965 and consistently ranks in the top ten in the nation. They are currently #3 in the country. SCORE can provide a variety of services from getting a business established to helping a business in trouble. The Akron chapter is located in the former Polsky building in downtown Akron.

Beverly said before coming to our meeting she also read our club website, the District Grant application for the micro finance bank. She talked about Rotary clubs reaching out to the young people who's lives we have touched in the speech contests, scholarships

VP of Community, Bid shared that we currently have speakers for our club meetings through the end of September. Reverse Raffle Chair Jim Sawin passed out the ticket list and Reverse Raffle event tickets. Members are asked to each sell 4 tickets and to provide 2 baskets for the event. Jim shared a letter requesting donations for the Reverse Raffle & Silent Auction has been created along with a basket analysis of our 2015 Silent Auction. Both documents will be emailed to club members.
Margie Roop drew the 50/50 ticket. Margie shared that we are coming up on the 10 year anniversary of her trip to West Africa to establish micro trust banks. Our original project has changed many lives. The club members requested she return to a meeting to talk about the original project and the impact it has made. Margie was the club president in 2008-2009.
Tom DeBord is also a past president of the club from 2004-2005. He was with Summa Barberton Hospital, he relocated to Washington. The club presented him with a Barbetonopoly game to remember Barberton.

Denny shared the club Labor Day Corn Roast event is on Saturday, Sept 1. A sign up sheet is going around. The roaster is being donated by Kevin Gift for the event and the club still needs to secure the supplies: corn, butter, seasonings, etc.
Reverse Raffle chair Jim indicated the planning will begin for the October 25 event. Volunteers will be needed for the committee and the event.
Our speaker Susan Baker is a Mentor Recruiter for REM, Ohio. Ohio Shared Living (OSL) also known as Adult Foster Care, encompasses personal care and supportive services provided to an adult with developmental disabilities by a live-in mentor. The mentors are carefully screened and selected as they coordinate or facilitate all of the individual needs. That can include things like cooking meals, providing transportation, coordinating appointment planning or providing activities and enduring community involvement. Susan also wanted to share that persons providing care to an adult family member in their home may be eligible for supplemental family income. REM Ohio program staff are also available to provide support, training and emergency assistance.

Our speaker Terry Lawrence is the Director of Inter Ministerial Relations with Christian Healthcare Ministries. Terry shared Christian Healthcare Ministries is defined by ACA as a Health Care Alternative. It was founded in 1981. They occupy 2 properties in Barberton, on on Hazelwood and the other on Wooster Road. He shared they are the original health cost sharing ministry and are based on verses in the Bible in Acts and Galations. They operate in all 50 states.
Jim reminded the club we will not be meeting at Thano's for 2 weeks. Next week is an evening meeting and the following week is July 5.

Treasurer Vic advised the golf outing realized a profit of $9200 and commended the hard work of the club, and the volunteers. Our speaker was Jeff Stewart of Stewart Pest Control. Jeff was introduced by Dave Stephens. Jeff shared some of their top insect complaints: bed bugs, bees, stink bugs, and ants. The list changes around from year to year. Jeff shared some interesting facts about bed bugs: Cleveland, Ohio is #1 in the country for bed bugs, and bed bugs can live for a year and a half with out any food.

Bruce May advised the club Foundation Board will meet briefly after the regular club meeting next week. In addition, we have 1 meeting after the meeting this morning before the golf outing. As a reminder, we will not meet on Thursday, June 7.

T Wallace handed out to the club members in attendance their giving report to the Rotary International Fdn Annual Fund. As a club we need to average $35 per member annually in order to qualify to apply for a District Grant. At present our club average is $15.44. Our quarterly dues are set up so that by the end of each Rotary year each member has made the $35 donation. However, we have some members not current with their dues. Donations may also be made on the Rotary International Web site. (You can find the link to the RI Foundation on our club home page). Then log in to the RI site and head to member section and make a donation.

The students were the speakers. Today was the Academic Scholarship Awards Breakfast. Jim opened the meeting and thanked Shelly for her service. He also thanked Tim and Chris for taking the donations for the Sub Zero Mission project to the District 6630 gathering. Jim shared he attended his first Rotary cluster meeting - a meeting of the club presidents of our cluster. We will be hosting 2 of the meetings this next Rotary year.

Our speaker for today was Sarah Palace - United Way, her topic i.C.A.R.E Mentoring Program. iC.A.R.E. is a mentoring program in BHS with the intention to expand it throughout the BCS. Sarah has an office in BHS. The vision of the program is to provide everyone who needs and wants a mentor with one.

We talked golf. The registration/event sponsor forms were passed out by Rick. This is one of 2 major fund raising events the club does each year. This is a great networking event and an opportunity to meet other area business persons. Rick passed out the list of last years foursomes, Critch asked for our raffle ticket sale progress.

Jim reminded club members of the District 6630 Sub Zero Project and asked donations be brought to the club meetings before the District Conf. April 27-29th. Gail Foster shared memories and pictures of Chippewa Lake Park. She shared that the Chippewa Lake Historical is relatively new- 3 years old. The park was in operation from 1878-1978. The ballroom was the scene where now famous entertainers could be found at the early stage of their career: Lawrence Welk Band, Neil Diamond. Chippewa Lake was known as Ohio's largest natural lake. It is a glacial lake and was about 50' deep. Now it is mostly filed with silt and is in danger of becoming a marsh in a few years.

Our District Governor Amy Kapostasy has asked that we kick off our District Conference this year with a District Service Project to support our community. She has chosen a great nonprofit group to support. The name of the Charity is Sub Zero Mission. Sub Zero Mission helps homeless stay warm during the winter months by providing hats, coats, gloves, boots, sleeping bags, new socks, tents and other warming items. They do this because nobody should freeze to death in America. A group of volunteers from sub Zero Mission helps find those exposed to the elements in northeast Ohio and other cities in the region then offers them warming items. The 501C3 BBB 5-Star Accredited Organization owns several vehicles to scout and make deliveries in these areas. The group also concentrates on finding veterans who make up a high percentage of homeless. They carry special laminated cards with contact information in order to get them the special help that is available to veterans We are asking all of our Rotary and Interact clubs to collect men's boots, size 9-13, Adult Sleeping Bags, Gloves, Coats and Hats and bring them to the District Conference in April. The meeting was called to order by president elect, Chris Stoll. Guests were recognized and included our 4 Way Test Speech Contest contestants, Rose Morrison and Sydney Shufford from Norton HS along with their coach Tricia Pletcher. Chris reminded club members of the upcoming board meeting on Tuesday, Mar 13 with the golf committee meeting too. Shelly shared the scholastic committee met after last weeks meeting and chose the recipient of the Academic Scholarship for BHS as well as the Gavin Westover Scholarship. The selection date needed to be moved up due to BHS schedule.
She also shared that the winner of the contest will be invited to attend the District 6630 Contest.April 7, 2018 Aurora High School in Aurora, OH 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM 7 Prizes at the District level will be*: 1st place: $1200.00 2nd place: $900.00 3rd place: $700.00 Honorable Mentions: $200.00.
Rose spoke about sign language. She used the 4 Way Test to show how the lack of familiarity, despite the portion of the population affect by hearing loss, is not only unfair but costing innocent lives.
Sydney spoke about learning from the past and used the 4 Way Test to show how our failure to learn from the mistakes of the past is not only unfair but is costing innocent lives.
Both were excellent speeches. The first place and runner up received prizes and Tricia also received a prize for NHS for participating. Sydney was our winner and Rose was runner up.
The pre meeting featured the cast of the upcoming musical at BHS: The Addams Family. The cast of the play entertained the club during breakfast with a medley of songs from the play. Jim then conducted the business meeting. Rick Fisher announced there will be a meeting of the Golf Co. at the upcoming Rotary Bd meeting to be held on Mar 13. The Kasers then gave a presentation, it was their 2012 trip to Mexico that was the clubs international project.
The meeting was called together by club president, Jim Sawin. Birthdays were recognized- we sang to Tim. Rick Fisher reported on our upcoming Golf Outing at Barberton Brookside on June 8. They set a goal for 4 somes and are requesting door prizes. The next meeting of the committee will be after the March Rotary Bd meeting on March 13. Rick also gave an update on the shoes the club members donated to the District to be sent to Senegal. Our club donated 230 prs of shoes and District 6630 sent 4000 prs.
Selena shared that our March 1 meeting will not only have a Rotary Club presentation by Don and Ruth Kaser but during breakfast there will be a short skit by the cast members of The Adams Family to give us a preview of the play that will be at the high school March 22-25. Shelly requested some club members to remain after next weeks meeting so scholarship applications can be reviewed for BHS. Their deadline will be Fri, March 2. Also the 4 Way Test Speech Contest for our club will be the follow club meeting- March 8. The club will need to send a representative to Aurora HS for the District 6630 level contest to be held on April 7.
Vic noted that both Mar 1 and Mar 8 meetings will be a buffet so come early to get your seat and have your breakfast.
Our speaker was Paula Schleis, a reporter with the Akron Beacon Journal. Paula is an award winning reporter with the Beacon Journal. Her beat covers Barberton, Stow and Cuy. Falls. She talked about the changes in the newspaper industry how the Beacon is proud they are still a daily paper- printing 7 days a week as other local papers are now longer a full week in print. Their reporting staff is smaller these days, due to several reasons. One is technology now lets a single reporter what also took a support staff to help. She shared that Barberton was one of their biggest subscriber bases.

Jim urged club members to reach out to new businesses in the community with information regarding Rotary and invite them to an up coming meeting.
Rick shared that there will be a golf co. meeting on Weds Feb 21 at 7:30 am at the Lake Anna Y.
Taylor and Payton, students at BHS are in the DECA program. They shared information regarding their project: Cool 2 be Kind. They advised at the start of the project they placed a survey on the BHS web site asking for parent and student input regarding bullying. They shred the survey results with the club. They talked about how they have started a Kindness Club at the High School, and how they are working with the elementary and middle school students. Barberton High School DECA has been working to battle bullying in our schools and community through the Kindness Is Magic campaign. One part of their project is to have every child in Barberton City Schools decorate a cut out heart showing what kindness means to them. These hearts will be on display at Kave Coffee Bar on Fourth Friday; Friday, February 23 from 5-8 pm. At the meetings end the club presented Taylor and Payton with a donation of $200 for their project.

Chris shared that there is a District Grants Committee meeting Saturday Feb 24 to cover District Grants for the 2018/2019 Rotary year. Our club must have 2 members attend each year in order to qualify to apply for any District grants. Our speaker Daisha Dancy gave club members some hand outs with the topics of how to deal with identity theft, identifying scams, and some of the most popular scams. She shared that the top consumer complaint received relates to buying a new or used car. She also shared that 74% of scams are targeted towards seniors. She said to beware of the fake scanners installed at gas pumps and ATM machines. She also recommended not to leave apps open on your phone as they could be subject to scanners.

Diane Sheridan from the CF club also has 50/50 tickets if anyone would be interested (I think they are $5 each but I forgot to ask today). Diane is always in Barberton so she could drop tickets off if there's any interest.

Jim also discussed an email we received from Julianne at BPL. The library will be offering use of their display cases to the service clubs for this year. Jim asked if club members had Rotary items, club history, flags, pictures. The club indicated we had sufficient items of interest and we would like the use of a display case. Jim will contact Julianne and suggested club members bring items to upcoming meetings.

Our speaker at today's meeting was Jan Apisa, the Director of Community Engagement for the Victim Assistance Program. Jan shared some facts regarding how crime affects Summit County Residents, the services they offer, who they serve. Every 1.5 days someone is a victim of rape. Victim Assistance Program supports approximately 7000 Summit County residents and or employees victimized by crime or trauma every year. They offer 24 hour crisis intervention, advocacy, professional ed and community outreach.

The board met following the meeting to discuss the request made by last week by the Fairlawn Club-that Barberton present their clubs grant request to the District 6630 for the new Observatory at Bath Nature Preserve. The Fairlawn Club is short of the necessary funds to complete the project but are unable to apply to the district themselves having just successfully applied for a grant. Our board requested clarification as to which Rotary year the grant would be applied- this year, Jim's year or the next. If it was the next year we would have concerns that we would not be able to apply ourselves. Jim advised he would contact Fairlawn and clarify the grant year. The District Grant Committee will meet on Monday, Feb 5.
Last weeks meeting featured Arne and John from the Fairlawn Rotary Club providing a follow up report on one of their international projects: fiber optic endoscopes. Our club supported this project with a $2000 donation. They also requested our club support to obtain a District 6630 Grant. Board members Jim had sent an email requesting a brief board meeting regarding the grant support:
"We were asked this morning to partner with the Rotary Club of Fairlawn to help complete their observatory project. In short, they are building an observatory building for kids in Bath so they are able to see space through high-end telescopes. They cannot apply for two district grants so asked if our Rotary club would do one. This would give $3,500 from district to help complete this project. Fairlawn will cover the other $3,500 plus an additional $1,000 to meet their final $8,000 need. The total project is about $100,000 which they have raised all but this last $8,000 over this 2 year period. Could you all stick around after next Thursday, Jan. 18 meeting as a board to see if we would like to pursue this opportunity? It’s very time sensitive so the quicker we come to a decision the better"

Jim shared that Rick Fisher agreed to be the head of the Golf Outing Committee. Our golf outing is scheduled for Friday, June 8 at Brookside. Vic Meyers shared he was interviewed by Summa and will be on their website and Facebook page regarding his positive experience with their cancer center. Denny Liddle said he received the information that the new CFO of the Barberton Community Foundation, Jane Litz will be applying for membership in our club.
We welcomed and inducted as a new member Kamelia Fisher. Kamelia is the Executive Director of Summit Artspace, her sponsor is Selena Myers.
Our speaker was Arne van der Heyde with the Fairlawn Rotary Club. Arne presented a follow up report on their clubs recent international project -2 fiber optic endoscopes, used in Chile as a diagnostic aide following cleft palate repair. Our club contributed $2000 to this project along with the Fairlawn Club and a Rotary club in Chile. The fiber optic endoscopes are used as an aide to diagnose speech problems after cleft palate repair. Recipients post cleft palate surgery have improved facial features but are often left with the inability to speak clearly. The endoscope helps to not only see the cause of the speech problems but the resulting diagnostic photos can be stored in a file for reference.
Arne along with fellow club member, John Shulan spoke of another District 6630 project their club is working on and they are requesting our assistance. They are the sponsor of a new astronomy observatory at the Bath Nature Preserve. This observatory will be ADA accessible and on clear sky nights will be open to all. Their club is $8000 short of their goal and would like to apply for a District grant, however they have recently applied for one, so are not eligible. They are asking us to make the application, ( as suggested by the District 6630 Grants committee). Jim suggested the grant info and project info be emailed to him so our board can discuss and advise their club. Arne indicated this was time sensitive as the next District Grants meeting is at the beginning of February.
The long range weather forecast is showing a balmy 45 degrees and cloudy at meeting time, so hopefully it will be a standing room only meeting when Arne van der Heyde gives an update on the Chile Medical Equipment Project we supported through the Fairlawn Rotary Club.

The meeting was called to order by club president, Jim Sawin. It is our last meeting of the 2017 calendar year. Happy Birthday wishes were given to Barb and Critch. Jim presented Dennis O'Connell with a check for $5000. The $5000 is the fourth and final payment of our $20,000 pledge for the Magical Theatre renovation project. Our club has not only made a monetary donation towards the renovation we assisted as volunteer members helping to clear out sections of the theater prior to the renovation.
Our speaker was Father Bill Browne with Saint Augustine Church. Father Browne shared his faith background and tied it in with his message of the importance of works-serving God.
Reverse Raffle/Silent Auction tickets and money should have been turned in and or reported at our meeting last week, however Vic will happily accept money and tickets this week. Our speaker was Joe Stefan, the Director of Planning and Community Development for the City of Barberton. Joe shared some of the new and exciting things happening in Barberton. Some of the things being discussed are- proposed legislation for medical marijuana, new businesses interested in coming to downtown and near downtown.
We recognized several guests at this meeting. Our guests included Tina Linton and Theresa Lyons with Christian Health Ministries, Kelly Smith with Mancan Temporary Staffing Employment Agency, Jason Ondrus, Assistant Superintendent for Business Operations and Personnel. Student Services, and our speaker, Ilene Shapiro,Summit County's first female County Executive.
Jason and Jeff Ramnytz shared the importance of issue 28- a renewal and not a new tax. Support was requested for this issue and information was distributed.
Ilene talked about some of the challenges and directions Summit County is taking with regarding to the aging population, and drug overdoses.

The meeting was called to order by club president, Jim Sawin. Our speaker was Dr. Michael Hughes, the Sr. VP of Summa Health System, Barberton Campus. Dr. Hughes has a background in cardiac intervention. He provided updates on the hospital and shared news of an NIH program- the educational bus -"All Us" that will be at Tuscora Park on Friday, Sept 8. It was there to enroll people in a public health study from 11:30-3:30.
A check presentation for $750 was made to Executive Director Mark Fairhurst of Embracing Futures. The Embracing Futures Oral Health Education Program provides one personal toothbrush, one tube of tooth paste, one dispenser of dental floss, two disclosing tablets, fun work sheets, and one tooth brushing calendar to third grade elementary students. This past school year Embracing Futures 4 counties (Summit, Portage, Stark, Medina), 263 classrooms, in 76 schools (public, parochial, private), and taught 6,180 students how to brush their teeth. And specifically, they taught 309 third graders at St. Augustine, and Barberton Elementary’ s East and West schools.

He resides in Hartville and came to share construction updates- the status of ongoing projects as well as projects down the pike. Treasurer Vic Myers announced there were 11 weeks remaining until our Reverse Raffle & Silent Auction and urged club members to go out and Sell Sell Sell tickets so we can then concentrate on donations for the Silent Auction.
Selena passed out the sign up sheets for our upcoming events. The sign up sheet was also passed around for volunteering at Tons of Taters at Mum Fest. Volunteer opportunities still remain for Saturday, from 4-6 pm.
Our speaker, Judge Todd McKenney is a Judge of the Barberton Municipal Court District. While Summit County Probate Judge, he initiated the Summit County Good Deeds Project which identified and educated thousands of Summit County residents about making survivorship deed updates to avoid probate when property is transferred upon death. For his efforts Judge McKenney received Akron Bar Association's Liberty Bell Award in 2013. Todd spoke to the club about a project in which he is involved: restoration of a drivers's license. He shared that 15-20% of people driving are doing so with out a valid license and the difficulties encountered in license restoration. He also distributed information regarding Barberton Drug Court.

Our speakers were 2 intern that have been working in city government with Joe Stefan : They are Justine Liddle and Marisa Russo. Justine is the daughter of club member Denny Liddle. Justine and Marisa shared news of the programs they are working on. Their internship is a Mayor Judge initiative that Joe think has been successful. Both Justine and Marisa were in DECA at BHS Justine is in her 2nd year at Heidelberg and Marisa graduated this year and will be attending the University of Akron. Some of their projects included the Neighborhood First Project, the list of city lots, helping at Switching Gears and Barberton Better Block. Joe spoke briefly about how busy it is at the Planning Dept these days as there are every day businesses reaching out to them interested in moving to Barberton.

The ticket amount will remain at $110 per couple with 2 drink tickets included. The proceeds of the event to be going towards our area projects: Emerging Futures(the elementary school dental project), interpretative signage on the Towpath Trail, and the Magical Theatre. Jim also reminded club members the Mum Festival is just around the corner and our club fundraiser is the Tons of Taters as well as a booth to sell Barbertonopoly. The dates on this years Mum Festival are September 23 and 24th.
Our speaker was Frank Sands with First Tee of Greater Akron. The First Tee is an international youth development organization introducing the game of golf and its inherent values to young people. Through after school and in school programs, we help shape the lives of young people from all walks of life by reinforcing values like integrity, respect and perseverance through the game of golf. And it’s making a difference.

Vic shared that a good event was needed due to our pledges: the final payment to Magical Theatre for their remodel project, the donation for Towpath signage, and the dental program at elementary schools.
Our speaker was Tom Craig. Tom told of a shared history between Scouting, Rotary and the YMCA. He shared that it was Rotary clubs that helped to spread the word about Scouting around the US, and the first headquarters for Scouting was in a YMCA. Tom said that Barberton has 10 packs and troops with 195 youth participants. Barberton is also home to the oldest troop in the council- 102 yrs old.
Our Rotary Club sponsors pack 3113. The pack started as a Lion pack as it was K-now the kids are on to 1st and 2nd grade so they are Tigers and Wolves. The pack meets at the Lake Anna YMCA

Jeff Ramnetz, new Barberton City Schools Superintendent was our speaker for this last morning meeting of the 2016/2017 Rotary year. Denny Liddle reminded club members of the upcoming year end dinner at the Galaxy. Barberton City Schools Treasurer, Shawna Jones was also in attendance.
Jeff has applied for membership to the club, and spoke of his career in the school system and his plans as the school superintendent.

He is a Residential Energy Consultant He spoke about Dominion East Ohio's Home Performance with Energy Program. This program includes a $25 home energy assessment. Denny reminded club members we will meet next week, however our Annual Banquet is the following week. He also said he is buying the first round of beverages. Vic reminded members to please pay this quarters dues promptly as our Rotary year is ending so the District as well as RI dues are due by the club.
Upcoming club events also include Barberton Rotary at the Rubber Ducks- we will be going to the July 7th game and the $25 is for buffet and ticket.
Bruce May requested a nomination for our club Foundation board to replace Dave Taylor- PE Jim Sawin accepted and was voted to replace Dave Tayor on the Foundation Board.

The report on the golf outing was given by treasurer Vic Myers: we had 19 foursomes at our event, with a net of $6575. for the Foundation. Vic shared there was some confusion about the location of the outing as some of the golfers did not pick up on the change in venue. Perhaps next years Save the Date cards as well as our advertising can promote the new location. He has set the date for the 2018 outing as June 1.
It was announced that former club member Ed Devane passed away, his calling hours will be at Zak-Thacker & Monbarren Funeral Home on Friday from 5-8pm. We recognized Shelly and Jim's birthdays, (although Jim was not present).
Upcoming club events include the annual dinner on June 29 for $30 a person and Barberton Rotary at the Rubber Ducks $25 gets you a ticket and buffet dinner on July 7.
Our speaker was Amber Genet regarding the upcoming Barberton Better Block event to be held at the end of July= July 28-29. Amber discussed some of the things that will be happening that weekend, the need for volunteers and possible club recognition. The club meeting on May 25-the last one before our golf outing. Vic asked club members to please pay in advance for our Annual Dinner and Installation to be held at the Galaxy Restaurant on June 29. The cost is $30 per person for the buffet meal and dessert. There will be a cash bar. Carl requested door prizes, many more door prizes for the golf outing. Denny suggested the club transition back to our previous gathering time and meeting start. We will gather at 7:15 and start the meeting at 7:45 running till 8:30am
Our speaker Danielle Caron is an LPN and is the VP of Aspire Employment. Danielle shared some of the services offered by Aspire Employment for persons seeking to be hired as well as potential employers.
The Academic Scholarship award breakfast was the feature of this mornings meeting. Attending the breakfast was Taylor Odom and her mom (NHS), Jenna White and her parents (MHS). Also Michael Holtzapple and his dad joined us. Michael has been awarded the Gavin Westover Technical Scholarship. Not present this morning was Dorothy Askew (BHS).
Denny passed around the club year end banquet that will introduce Jim Sawin as our club president for 2017/2018 and Chris Stoll as our P.E. Vic shared he will accept the $30 per person cost of the banquet as of this meeting.
Carl gave updates on the Golf Outing- there are still openings available for 4 somes. We have moved our golf outing to Barberton Brookside Country Club this year and it will be on Friday, June 2. Raffle tickets are still available and door prizes for the golfers will be needed.

Jack shared news of a proposed combined event for Akron , Canton and Barberton Rotary at the Rotary Camp for fellowship. He is asking for people from our club to be on the planning committee if our club is interested.
Shelly shared our previous scholarship winner Zoey Koehler passed away. The scholarship committee met and determined winners for the 2017 Academic Scholarships and the Gavin Westover Scholarship. The club awards breakfast for the Academic Scholarships will be at our May 11th meeting at Thano's. The Vocational Awards Breakfast at Summa Barberton will be held on MONDAY May 15 (Note the day of the week-the Monday award date is why there is no Thursday club meeting).
Shoe update:club notice that we are now at 190 pairs of shoes. A final push is needed to put us over the 200 pair goal. Anyone who would like to donate cash and I can turn that cash into shoes. Like magic, Shelly' $40.00 donation became five pair of really nice children's Skechers shoes.
Selena advised we have an open speaking date on June 15. Vic shared the club 2017/2018 Budget will be voted on at our next meeting.
Our speaker was Mayor Bill Judge. Mayor Judge asked club members to come to the State of the City address at the Active Adult Center on Thursday, April 20 at 6pm. He talked about the job growth that is happening in the City, the planned new Justice Center, expanding sewer services to Norton & New Franklin., downtown development, and the need to build up the city's reserve fund.

Golf Outing -Selena has sent out an email to the club with a request for door prizes -3 from each member with a minimum value of $15 each. The flyer, labels list, and donation letter were also included. These items have been added to the Golf Outing event tab on Club Runner.

Our speaker was Justin Chesnic with ODOT District 4. Justin gave an updated presentation regarding area road projects and passed out information regarding OHGO with is either an app (OHGO.com/app) or at the website OHGO.com.

Our speaker was Dan Rice, the President and CEO of the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition, headquartered in Akron Ohio. Dan spoke of the development and use of the canals in Ohio and the nation. He shared the opening of the canals were what helped settle Ohio and make it an industrial powerhouse. During their height, Ohio led the nation in the number of canalways. The Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition was established in 1989, and is a private, non-profit organization working to develop the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail and National Heritage Area in Summit, Stark and Tuscarawas Counties. The OECC provides educational programs, events, and publications about the Canalway, while developing strong working relationships with partners to preserve and interpret the natural, historical and recreational resources throughout the area.
Rick Fisher shared he has collected to date about 150 pairs of shoes for the Shoes for the Sole project. A donation $250 by the club for the Tween Summer Program was presented to Barberton Public Library Childrens Services Manager Lisa Gilgenbach and Director Julianne Bedel.
Our last meeting in March 2017 will have Dan Rice, the President and CEO of the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition speaking to us about the new BikeShare program coming to Barberton. Rick Fisher shared at last weeks meeting he will be wrapping up- literally and figuratively the clubs collection for the Shoes for the Sole program as he wants to get them to the District. Please bring your gently used or new shoes to the meeting, also donations are appreciated to be used for shipping the container to its destination. At our last meeting Rick shared he is closing in on his goal of 200 pairs of shoes from our club.

Guests were recognized and included the students in the speech contest, parents, and administrators Mrs. Tricia Pletcher from Norton HS, Ms. Marchia White from Manchester HS , Mr. Jay Austin from Barberton HS, and Mrs. Patti Cleary, Barberton Schools Superintendent.
The club holds the 4 Way Test Speech Contest annually. The winner of the Rotary Club of Barberton contest qualifies for the Rotary District 6630 contest to be held April 8th at Aurora High School and a prize of $100. Second place received $75 and is also the runner up for the District 6630 contest if the winner is unable to attend. The 3rd place was awarded $50. Each school receives $75 for participating in the contest.
Each student gave a speech 5-7 minutes in length. The purpose of the speech was to solve an ethical problem using the principles of the Rotary Four Way Test.
The Rotary 4 Way Test is: "Of the things we think, say or do: 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"
The winners were: 1st place Hannah Hitchings from Norton H.S. her topic was Anti- intellectualism in America, 2nd place Jonathan Walton from Norton H.S. with a topic of the the Mortgage Crisis and the Recession, 3rd Place Stephanie Smith from Manchester H.S. with a topic of Self Harm Awareness.
Our club 4 Way Test Speech Contest is the speaker at this weeks meeting. A total of 6 students will be trying to win 1st , 2nd or 3rd prize. Only 1st prize will go on to the District 6630 contest on April 8. The District winner could win a $1200 first prize. Participating students and their advisers will be from Barberton, Norton and Manchester High Schools.
You will want to get there early for a seat, breakfast will be the buffet.

What is Better Block? Jason Roberts, one of the creators, described it as urban prototyping or retro fitting of the built environment. Question: how do you take something with a solid foundation and turn it into something thousands of people can use and enjoy? Easy. You just do it. Opposite to the “top down” concept of urban design is Better Block. It was founded in Dallas’ Oak Cliff by Jason Roberts and Andrew Howard. The Better Block is a demonstration tool that temporarily re-visions an area to show the potential to create a walk-able, vibrant, neighborhood center. The idea and the charrettes to realize it have quickly spread to other cities like Memphis, St. Louis, New York and Boston.
Barberton will get its Better Block on 2nd Street NW between Lake and Paige on July 28 and 29. A Pinterist Board has been set up with some ideas for our event.

VP of Club Service Selena Myers shared upcoming club events: a performance of Newsy at Porthouse in August, a Nooks and Crannies tour at Stan Hywett, packing at the Food Bank on May 20. She also asked members to read the informational email sent out to them regarding the Barberton Better Block event to be held July 28 and 29th on 2nd St NW. VP of Vocational Service Shelly Habegger shared that Play Attention has been uploaded to the other elementary school so there is one at each building.
Our speaker was Roger Wright. Roger is the Director of the 4 Cities Educational Compact. 4 area high schools comprise the compact: Barberton, Norton, Copley and Wadsworth. Barbeton has the most programs. Every school in Ohio must offer career/tech Ed. There are 25 comprehensive HS in the state with 49 joint vocational schools districts. There are 17 compacts in the state. Copley HS has a chef & hospitality program and they serve lunch on Thursdays and Fridays. He discussed some of the programs offered at each school and the program partners. The 4 cities compact has a Facebook page.

Tom Craig brought up the possibility of a memorial/recognition by our club for Christine Sandmann. Christine in addition to being an active support of the Scouts helped to organize the pack we sponsor. Rick Fisher suggested the possibility of the Service Above Self Award to a community member. This could be discussed at the next meeting of the Rotary Bd.
Julianne Bedel shared a need of the library-the Tween Book Club to consider a donation of $500 by our club towards the program for 10-13 year old to go towards extras for the program.
Carl Bako announced there will be a meeting of the Golf Committee on Monday, Mar. 6 at 8 am at the Y.
Selena shared some of the events she is working on for the club for the rest of the year. One of them is Newsy at Porthouse Theatre.
Our speaker was Dave Johnson, the Director of Public Relations & Communication for the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland & the Global Center for Health Innovation. Dave shared some of the recent exciting events in Cleveland such as the RNC and the re do of Public Square. A place to go to see what is happening in Cleveland is Destination Cleveland

Our speaker for this weeks meeting will be Dave Johnson - Cleveland Convention Center. Dave will speak to us about the great things happening in downtown Cleveland, it's rebirth as a convention destination, the success of the RNC in 2016, and many of the big events coming to our region in the coming years, including the 2019 Major League Baseball All-Star Game.
Shoes for the Sole is a project of the District 6630 Conference Interact Service Project. The project is collecting new or gently used tennis shoes and/or cleats for both children and adults. Sport or casual shoes are the most needed types of shoes requested by Shoes the Africa, the group the Interact Club is collecting for. The District Interact and Rotary Clubs are asked to donate $1 per pair of shoes if possible to help with shipping costs from Atlanta to Senegal. Shipping to Atlanta has already been donated.
This project was discussed at the February Board Meeting, and we voted to support the project. Rick Fisher has agreed to coordinate this project for the club. He is collecting the new or gently used shoes at club meetings -the deadline is the District Conference in April. He also shared he would purchase new shoes if any members wish to donate funds towards shoe purchase. Donations are also appreciated towards the shipping costs of $1 per pair. To date he has collected 40 pairs of new/gently used shoes.

Tom introduced our speaker, Jack Hopkins. Jack is a member of the Rotary Club of Ashtabula. He is a recipient of the Rotary Service Above Self Award. He recently returned from a trip to Zimbabwe where he worked local residents to make bore hole wells and shared heirloom seeds for their cultivation and planting.

Denice is Senior District Director with JA for Summit/Portage County. Hannah is the District Mgr of JA in Summit County. Denice shared some facts and volunteer information about JA. They now have programs for kids from K through 12th grade. JA has 3 pillars : personal finance, work readiness and entrepreneurship. The elementary school level has five 30-40 minute programs. Middle school has 6-8 lessons. High school has a focus on economics- financial literacy. JA of North Central Ohio had 24,600 students participating in 12 counties, 176 schools, with 848 volunteers and 1175 programs.

Our speakers were DECA project leaders Taylor and Rachel. The students discussed their project "Take 5 Inside" They shared their 2017 project will be a week of giving for 5 Barberton nonprofits with the goal of raising $500 and having 500 people participate to work together to better the community. Proceeds will be split between the organizations served and the Youth Philanthropy Fund at the Barberton Community Foundation. The 5 nonprofits are: Barberton 1st Church of Christ, 1st Presbyterian Church of Barberton, Lake Anna YMCA, Child Guidance & Family Solutions, and BACM. The project has a Go Fund Me Site that includes links to sign up to volunteer.

Our speaker was Zachary Hoffman a Public Information Officer with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. Zachary discussed the importance of price comparison for gas and electric providers. He discussed the services offered by the PUCO and handed out information fliers for the PUCO Call Center, Apples to Apples (Energy Choice), and Energy and Water Conservation Tips.

We will have a color ad in the Barberton Herald for the next 2 weeks advertising the games and places to purchase. VP of Vocational Service, Shelly Habegger shared news of a Keynote and Book Signing to be held February 3, 2017, from 8 am to 11 am in Barberton HS Theatre. The speaker will be teacher, author and founder of the Freedom Writers Fdn, Erin Gruwell. Erin's topic will be "Becoming a Catalyst for Change".
Our speaker was Deacon Robin Adair. Rev. Adair was ordained in 1994. He shared some of his thoughts regarding finding God in the ordinary, or finding meaning in the ordinary.

The program was a success, and will be repeated in spring of 2017. He announced the club has reserved Barberton Brookside Country Club for our 14th Annual Royal H Wood Memorial Golf Outing-Friday, June 2nd, 2017. Next weeks meeting will feature a Christmas Message given by Deacon Robin Adair. Club members are encouraged to bring family and friends.
He updated the club on our $1000 donation to the Salvation Army towards their gym improvements. A total of $5000 was collected towards this project allowing the Salvation Army to purchase 2 indoor basketball hoops.
Our speaker was Michael Videmsek. Mr Videmsek is the Managing Director of Arconic in Barberton. He shared the background and history of Alcoa, and the transition to the new company Arconic. He shared the company was split into Alcoa and Arconic in 2016. Alcoa is the commodities side of the company with the forging and mining of aluminum. Arconic is aerospace, commercial transportation, the automotive industry, building and construction. The Barberton location of Arconic is involved in machining the heavy duty and medium duty truck wheels used in original equipment as well as after market truck fleets. The wheels are forged in Cleveland. The Barberton location recently added a cast house. It allows them to take aluminum scrap and melt it down at more than 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit. The molten metal is then formed into 1,600-pound cylindrical billets and shipped out for eventual re-use. Arconic continues to invest in the Barberton location and its employees and management are active in the community.
The club traveled to Barberton High School and enjoyed the holiday concert by the Magic Singers. The singers were led by Nicole Petrarca and accompanied by Amy Howell. The concert included song and dance, the final tune included kazoos.
A reminder- if you come to Thano's this Thursday, December 1 you can have breakfast but the club will be meeting at Barberton High School.I wanted to send along details for this Thursday for the performance by the Magic Singers. Please enter through the front door of the high school and turn left. Once in the building, make another left into the theater. We will have food set up there for Rotarians and singers.

Our speaker was Rabbi John Spitzer. Rabbi Spitzer spoke of the mass execution of the Jews in Hungary, Hungary had had a community of almost 800,000. He spoke of the effects of hate speech then and today.
We meet this week and will have the pleasure of a Thanksgiving message by Rabbi John Spitzer. We will not meet on Thanksgiving Day. Our next meeting will be on December 1 and it will NOT be at Thano's. Our meeting on December 1 will be at Barberton High School Auditorium- the reason? Our "speakers" will be the Magic Singers Holiday Show.

Our speaker was Ann Otto. Ann is the author of " Yours in a Hurry", a historical novel. Ann has the following information regarding her novel:Life changes for the Hartle siblings when their prosperous parents die suddenly in 1901. Now it's 1908 and the three oldest—Anna, Addison and Purl—have come of age and use their generous inheritance to leave their small Ohio village. Experience historical events and with characters from Hollywood to Europe and the Pacific Rim, including famous film stars, aviators, and American heroes. The siblings sometimes visit Ohio, but not for long. As Addison often expresses at the end of his letters, they are "Yours in a hurry."

Denny read a thank you from Barberton Beautification for our donation of $500 to Mum Fest. Selena Myers shared some of the upcoming club events: 11/19 the Akron Children's Hospital Tree Festival, 12/3 is Wild Lights at the Akron Zoo. Jim Sawin introduced our speakers. Shon Christy is the president of Focial Point Social Media and a board member of Akron Rotary Camp. Dan Reynolds is the director of Camping Services at Akron YMCA. Shon spoke of the Akron Rotary Club involvement in Akron Rotary Camp. Dan spoke about the Akron Rotary Camp, its history, programs, and involvement with the YMCA. The camp was founded in 1924 by Akron Rotary Club members and was staffed by club members.In 1995, the collaboration with the Akron Area YMCA began and continues today. Rotary Camp further expanded its collaboration with the Akron Area YMCA in the spring of 2013. The YMCA’s Phoenix Alternative School developed an school program for children with emotional disabilities at Rotary Camp. Hilton and Lehner Cabin have been turned into classrooms for the school year. The school opened on April 8th with three students. Primary funding for the Camp’s budget comes from the Rotary Club of Akron. The Club raises funds through private donations, grants and fundraisers.

Denny discussed additional venues for selling Barbertonopoly, including the Barberton Christmas Walk. We would possibly set up a table at the Lake Anna YMCA. Volunteers would be needed for the selling table. Also, a volunteer opportunity exists to be the marketing point person to coordinate the game sales. Treasurer Vic Myers shared our annual Reverse Raffle & Silent Auction net was $9270.73.
November is also a short month meeting wise as we do not meet on Thanksgiving day. The month is filled with great speakers so be sure to join us -a reminder we meet Thursdays at 7:15 AM at Thano's.

The club prepares for the annual fall fundraising event: Reverse Raffle & Silent Auction. This is one of two fundraising events held by the Barberton Rotary Club. There will be no morning meeting of the club. The event is held at Guy's Party Center
The meeting was started with a presentation by Jim Stonkus, the President and CEO of the Barberton Community Foundation. Jim presented Denny Liddle with the Game Changer Award. The club also enjoyed cake.
Denny recognized our guests, including Keith Doyle from the Akron Rotary Club and Boy Scouts, and our speaker Jill Kolesar. Committee reports were given. Laura Thomas updated the club regarding Barbertonopoly sales. She indicated the game will be available at venues around Barberton. Tom Craig shared the club is live streaming our speaker presentations on the club Facebook Page. Club members are encouraged to like and share our page.
Our speaker was Jill Kolesar, the CEO of the Akron Area YMCA. Jill was introduced by club member and Akron Area YMCA Senior VPresident of Development, Brian Bidlingmyer. Brian shared that Jill is also a Rotarian and a past president of the Cuyahoga Falls Rotary Club. She began as a volunteer and became the first female CEO in the history of the Akron YMCA.

Speaking of the Reverse Raffle, we must call Guy's after our meeting on Thursday to give them a head count. Please bring your sold tickets and stubs to this weeks meeting as well as your committed ticket numbers. We will have a Reverse Raffle meeting following this weeks meeting regarding ticket sales. 3= the number of baskets so far for our Silent Auction. Please continue to collect donations to the Silent Auction. Also, an email has been sent out to club members requesting volunteers, it will be resent this week as a reminder as we will need all hands on deck.

Laura Thomas reported the initial offering of the Barbertonopoly games went well we will be setting up vendor sites around Barberton
Vic Meyers reported the net from the Tons of Taters sales was $4135. Proceeds for both will support the club
Ruth Kaser reported it is less than 30 days until our Reverse Raffle on October 20. We will need to give a head count to Guy's Party Center on October 6 for the food amounts. We will have a short meeting regarding ticket sales after our regular meeting. We need to be requesting items for our Silent Auction. The volunteer list has been drawn up and is online.
Our speaker was Mark Fairhurst. Mark is the Executive Director for Embracing Futures, Inc., a children's chariey whose core program provides orthodontic treatment for children from severe orthodontic and jaw miss-alignment problems.Mark shared the average age of the children treated is 13-1/2 -14 years old. He talked about the 3rd grade oral health program they do in classrooms that teaches correct tooth care and use of dental floss.

Our Reverse Raffle & Silent Auction, (10/20/2016 at Guy's ) is one of two fundraising events that support our area projects, such as our pledge to the capital campaign of the Magical Theatre, ongoing support of the the Lake Anna YMCA, and future projects of our presidents.

We will have a short meeting after the regular club meeting of September 29 regarding the Reverse Raffle. Please look at last years attendee list for ideas but feel free to venture from the list for someone new to which we can share Rotary. We will start circulating this years event volunteer list at the meeting.
We had several visitors at our meeting. Our speaker Jim McKee arrived with our banner for this Rotary year 2016-2017 "R0tary Serving Humanity" as well as our member pins. He also brought a possible Rotarian as a guest. He was joined by Jack Harig who encouraged members to attend the Rotary Foundation Centennial Celebration in Cleveland in October. Candace Croner, the Rotary District 5510 Regional Coordinator was in town visiting her parents from Arizona.
Denny Liddle shared the Barbertonopoly games would be arriving the week of MumFest-and will be shipped from Michigan. The bulk of the games will be stored in Tim Brenner's warehouse. Denny will have about 60 at his office to be signed out for sales at various points around Barberton. Laura Thomas is heading up our MumFest table of the games.
Denny also shared the hours of 4-6 pm on both Saturday and Sunday are severely understaffed. There is one person signed up for Saturday at 4-6 and 1.5 persons signed up for Sunday. The Sunday 4-6 volunteers are Don and Ruth Kaser. Due to Don's recent accident he has use of only one arm.

Vic Myers advised the club will again be supporting the Christmas Walk, with a $300 donation.
Denny talked about a local project involving the Salvation Army -to purchase 2 collapsible basketball hoops for their gym. The board pledged up to $1000 from the club towards this project.
Our speaker was Jim Mckee- our District 6630 Governor. Jim talked about the Rotary Foundation, how it came into being as well as the power of Rotary towards good works in the world.
How are those Reverse Raffle ticket sales going? Please look at last years attendee list and then check your friends list. We would like to have all of the tickets sold by the end of this month so we can spend October getting the rest of the Silent Auction baskets.

The meeting was called to order by President Elect (PE) Jim Sawin. Our guests included our speaker, Jo Dangel with the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank. Vic Myers reminded the club only 50 days remain until the clubs Reverse Raffle- our fall event. Selena Myers shared that payment is due for the Brew at the Zoo event we will have October 1. If we have 30 or more attending the cost goes down to $15 per person. She also passed around the volunteer list for our Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank event on Sept. 17th.

Jo Dangel spoke about the Akron Canton Regional Food Bank. She shared her background with the food back, how food banks came into being in the US. The first food bank was started in 1962 and there are now 200 in the US. Our country wastes a lot of usable food- there is enough food produced in our country to feed everyone, there should not be hunger in the US. Ohio has 12 food banks.

There are several opportunities coming up for fun at the Barberton Rotary Club. The volunteer sign up form to help at the Tons Of Taters (AKA TOT wagon) on Saturday, September 24 and/or Sunday, September 25th is going around. Volunteers would be joining a team of 3-4 in a three hour shift to take money, cook the taters', or cut/make the taters'. There is a separate sign up form to help sell the Barbertonopoly games the same Saturday and/or Sunday. In addition, the tickets have been printed for our fall Reverse Raffle to be held Thursday, October 20th at Guy's Party Center. Our club ticket guru T Wallace will be checking off your name and handing you your tickets- we are asking each club member to sell at least 3 tickets. It's not too soon to be asking for donations for baskets and/or items for the Silent Auction.

This year a shift sign up for the TOT truck will be for 3 hours 10-1, 1-4, and 4-6 each day. There is a separate sign up for the Barbertonopoly table selling the games.See Carl to sign up.

Lori Csipke and Lori Jensen shared information regarding what services are offered and how access to healthcare has changed in the nation with the National Healthcare Act and expanded access to Medicaid.From AxessPointe Community Health Center website: AxessPointe Community Health Centers are federally qualified health centers (commonly called community health centers) located in Northeast Ohio. The Club met at the Galaxy Restaurant on Thursday evening to induct officers for the 2016/2017 Rotary year and new member, Chris Stoll. The club present for 2016/2017 is Denny Liddle, and the president elect is Jim Sawin.
Time for the changing of the guard-the club president and new Rotary year. The new theme for 2016/2017 is now available on the Rotary International website and it is coming next to our club web page. We will not have a meeting Thursday morning. Our meeting will be at the Galaxy Restaurant in Wadsworth at 6pm. If you have not yet paid for the dinner you can pay at the event. The Galaxy is located at 201 Park Center Dr, Wadsworth, OH 44281.

The first meeting of our Reverse Raffle was held last week. Our theme will be- Party! We will be celebrating Barberton's 125th Anniversary. The cost of the event will be $110 per couple and the ticket includes 2 drink tickets. The drink tickets will be for beer, wine or soft drinks. The team of Carl Bako and Jasen Sokol will again MC our event. The ticket design has been sent to the printer and the fliers are next. Our next strategy meeting will be held once tickets and fliers are in hand.

Ruth Kaser announced the planning meeting of the Reverse Raffle immediately following the club regular meeting.
Our speaker was Barb Kirbawy. Barb traveled to St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer MA with her sister over Christmas. Barb shared information regarding abbey life and the retreats offered by the abbey.
This will be the last regular meeting for club prez Tom Craig. This meeting will include the presentation of our check to Barberton City Schools for Play Attention, and club member Barb Kirbawy as our speaker. Barb will be speaking about "In Monastery Silence" .
There will be short meeting immediately following the club meeting to set up the structure, price and theme of our 2016 Reverse Raffle. All are welcome to join in the planning.

Our speaker for this weeks meeting will be Evan Delahanty. Evan will be speaking about his experience as a Peace Corps Volunteer and one of his most successful projects, accomplished with the help of a grant from Rotary International. He set up an incredible infrastructure project that has snowballed into a great relationship between Rotary and a small village in the Amazon. This project is also part of what inspired him to launch his business, Peaceful Fruits, when he returned from Peace Corps.
There will be a meeting of the Barbertonopoly sales team immediately following our meeting this week. We will be discussing the available board spots as the art is due at the end of this month.

Vic reported on the net for our golf outing. He advised we made close to our budgeted amount for the event. Our net for this year was $8000. Bid thanked everyone who volunteered and participated in the event.
Tom reminded members of the upcoming officer induction/new member induction ceremony to be held on June 30 at the Galaxy in Wadsworth. Cost per person for the event is $35 and checks should be made payable to the Barberton Rotary Club.
Denny Liddle gave updates on Barbertonopoly. There will be a meeting of the sales team immediately following our meeting next week, June 16. We need to wrap up the unsold squares as the art is due June 30.
Ruth Kaser advised there will be a short meeting to plan the 2016 Reverse Raffle immediately following the June 23rd meeting. Agenda items are the event theme, basic event structure and cost.
Selena Myers invited club members to Stark States open house to be held next Thursday, June 16 from 6-7:30 pm. Welding demos and refreshments are some of the things that will be happening during the open house.
Our speaker was Theresa Osborne. Theresa is the Relay for Life Barberton Event Lead. She shared some data regarding cancer research and the structure of the Relay for Life. Her available literature included the schedule for the Barberton Relay for Life and Am Cancer Society help cards. She shared that proceeds from the Relay for Life help fund the Hope Lodges used by cancer patients and their families.
The meeting was called to order by club president, Tom Craig. Guests were recognized and included Mayor William B. Judge, Chief of Police Vincent Morber, Officer Marty Eberhart, other members of the police department and S.W.A.T team. Our guests also included John & Karen Godt representing the Hope for Honduran Children Foundation.
Rick Fisher spoke of the Rotary Service Provider Appreciation Award. It is an award recognizing a member of the police or fire department for exemplary service. Police Chief Morber nominated Officer Marty Eberhart in a letter of recognition to Rotary. Chief Morber shared that Officer Eberhart has been the Barberton FOP President for 9 years. Parades, festivals, deliver blue lights of support, assisting injured and distressed members, and taking care of kids with Touch a Truck events and Shop With A Cop- all these and more, Officer Eberhart is leading the way and showing others how much police officers really do care. He exemplifies everything that is good about the police profession and community policing. It is with that recommendation the Barberton Rotary Club presented Officer Marty Eberhart the 2016 Rotary Service Provider Appreciation Award.
Tim Brenner introduced John & Karen Godt who spoke about the Hope for Honduran Children Foundation. Karen and John shared pictures and described the impoverished state of the nation of Honduras and why they assist the Hope for Honduran Children Foundation. The Hope for Honduran Children Foundation, a U.S. 501(c)(3) organization, was established to help provide a nurturing environment for children ravaged by conditions of extreme poverty in Central America. In addition to supporting them with food, clothing, shelter, medical care and education, our ultimate goal is to instill the desire and provide the necessary tools for these children to become self-sufficient, caring, and responsible adults.
President Tom Craig then discussed our upcoming golf outing to be held next Friday, June 3. There will be a planning meeting for the outing at Thano's on Tuesday, May 31 at 7:30 am for any club members wishing to help in the organization of the event. We are still accepting 4 somes, and will need door prizes for the golfers and assistance at the outing all day.
This will be our last meeting before our golf outing. So please bring to this meeting your sold raffle ticket stubs, money, your sign up forms, your prizes. Help will be needed at the outing to help set up the golf carts, set up the prizes for the golfers, set up the signs, work the sign in table, etc. The shot gun start is at 9am but set up generally begins around 7:30-8 am. The event is held at Chippewa Golf Club located at 12147 Shank Rd in Doylestown and it is always a lot of fun whether you are volunteering or golfing.
The program this week is a special one: the Service Provider Recognition Event. You will want to arrive early for a good seat.

Tom and VP of International Service, Don Kaser presented a check for $2000 to the Fairlawn Rotary Club. Arne received the contribution from our club. The money will go towards a medical equipment.
VP of Vocational Service, Dr. Shelly Habegger introduced our academic scholarship recipients: Nikolina Kravljaca from Barberton High School, Zoey Kohler from Manchester High School, and Brandon Lewis, from Norton High School. Shelly shared some of the recommendations the students received as well as their future plans.

You will want to come early this week in order to get the best possible seat as we will be recognizing our Academic Scholarship winners at the club meeting. The Barberton, Norton and Manchester High School winners will be attending with their parents. Also on the agenda is the presentation of our club donation to the Fairlawn Rotary Club for their Chile Global Project.
Vic and Bid are hoping to receive money for Golf Outing Raffle Tickets as well as receiving prizes for the golfers, sponsors and donations for the outing and 4 somes.
The Barberton Rotary Club traveled to Summa Barberton Hospital for their weekly meeting. The agenda was the Annual Recognition Program honoring students from Barberton and Norton Schools in the Four Cities Compact Program. The program started with a short Rotary meeting lead by Club President, Tom Craig. Tom introduced those in attendance to the Rotary tradition of "Happy Dollars" -a dollar will buy one an opportunity to share with others in attendance why they are happy today. Many dollars were collected to recognize the achievements of the students, their parents, teachers and guidance counselors.
Director of the Four Cities Compact, Steven Farnsworth recognized the school superintendents, principals, and guidance counselors in attendance. He went on to recognize students in the following programs: Machine Technology, Athletic Health Care, Business Management, Marketing Education, Career Based Intervention, Criminal Science Technology, Masonry Building Trades, Cisco/A+, F.I.R.S.T. Program, Family & Consumer Sciences, Advancement to Nursing, Cosmetology, S.E.T. Program.
Rev Vic Myers presented the Gavin Westover Memorial Scholarship. The Gavin Westover Memorial Scholarship is a $1000 scholarship presented to an outstanding Barberton or Norton Career & Technical Education student. The club will return to their regular meeting day and location next week- Thursday, May 19th at Thano's at 7:15. The program will be the Academic Scholarship recognition.
Note- if you come to Thano's on Thursday you can have a nice breakfast however the club meeting will be in the Summa Barberton Hospital Conference Rooms on Friday, May 13 at 7:15 Please join us to recognize the outstanding achievements of those in the Four Cities Compact programs and the recognition of the winner of the Gavin Westover Memorial Vocational Scholarship.

Our speaker was Lisa Gilenbach, the Children's Services Manager at Barberton Public Library. Lisa shared the goal of the library to be a destination spot for children and families and how they are changing their format and services to achieve that goal.

Denny Liddle talked about upcoming District Grant opportunities for our club:
1. Parks & Rec. They are dedicating money to the rehab and upgrade of the McCafferty park. There are many children in that area and there is no playground equipment near there. They are looking at handicap accessible equipment to fill that vacant need also.
2. YMCA. They recently purchased the corner lot on Hopocan Ave. and 3rd. The plan is to work with Summit County DD and put playground equipment that can be utilized by YMCA and DD.
Our speaker, Jessica Evans talked about the Summit County CATCH Collaborative. CATCH is The Coordinated Approach to Child Heralth. It has the largest evidence base of any obesity prevention program. CATCH focuses on helping kids and communities make healthy choices in food and lifestyle.

Don Kaser shared the District Grant for the Fairlawn Club was approved, so they will be looking to us for our pledge. Tim Brenner talked about the District 4 Way Test Speech Contest he and our student attended. She did well, however she did not win.
Our speaker was John Shulan. John has been a Rotarian for 40 years. He is a past president of the Fairlawn Rotary Club. He is the president of Shulan's Fairlawn Jewelers and a Registered Jeweler with the American Gem Society. He is the president and founder of the Summit County Astronomy Club which is dedicated to creating curiosity. John shared the Astronomy Club was started with a District Grant through the Fairlawn Club.
In addition to the Golf Outing Sign Up forms the Raffle Tickets are in- our event is Friday, June 3rd. Volunteers will be needed for the event. Barbertonopoly Sales team-will be meeting after this weeks meeting.

Julie West shared some interesting information regarding Arch Klumph at our meeting last week. In addition to his business success he was a flute player. He played in the Cleveland Symphony, a precursor to the present Cleveland Orchestra. He proposed the creation of the Rotary Foundation in 1917, hence the celebration this fall due to Rotary's year.
Our speaker for this weeks meeting will be John Shulan. John is the president and founder of the Summit County Astronomy Club, and if it is sunny, we’ll go outside and look at the sun thru a solar telescope.

Denny Liddle advised we are ready to begin soliciting advertisers for Barbertonopoly. Barbertonopoly sales team: if you can, could you please plan to stay after the meeting on the Thursday the 14th for a “brief” meeting. We have all the documentation you will need and wanted to discuss some potential targets to get us moving.

Our speaker Julie West talked about Arch Klumph and the 100 th Anniversary Celebration of the Rotary Foundation to be held Sunday, October 23rd in Cleveland. Events will include a dinner and a concert by the Cleveland Orchestra. Julie shared information about Arch Klumph, his role in establishing the Rotary Foundation and with the Cleveland Orchestra. She also reminded the club members of the upcoming District Conference April 22-24 in Mayfield Ohio.

Rick Fisher shared news of the Service Above Self Awards we will be resuming for a Barberton Police and Fire person. The awards will be given at our May 19th meeting. Laura Thomas said the sales packs for Barbertonopoly are being prepared.
Our speaKer was Sarah Hays, the Local History Librarian at Barberton Public Library. Sarah talked about A.O. Austin- the electrical wizard. Mr. Austin, inventor, and engineering graduate was multi talented. He was an inventor, an electrical engineer, and had multiple patients. His first patent was in 1910. His company, AO Austin Inc was created in 1933. He was also a charter member of the Barberton Rotary Club.
Last week was Barberton history week! Hopefully you had a chance to attend or read about the inductees recognized at the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony this past Wednesday, the 23rd. That day was followed by a visit by Sarah Hayes, the Local History Librarian at Barberton Public Library to our club meeting on the 24th with a presentation about the talented A.O. Austin. As we head into April -the month of the Rotary District 6630 Conference it is fitting our speaker for our meeting this Thursday is past District Governor Julie West. Julie will be talking about Arch Klumph recognition.

Selena talked about the upcoming Walk of Fame Induction Ceremony to be held on Wednesday, March 23. In addition to the ceremony there will be events downtown, including a movie about Barberton at the Lake Cinema, a new art exhibit at Nine Muses, and tours of the Magical Theatre from 4-6 PM. The ceremony is at 3pm outside of Lake Cinema.
Shelly Habbeger shared our contestants for the Club 4 Way Test Speech Contest will include the two students from Norton HS as Manchester HS withdrew from this years contest. The winner of our contest will go on to compete at the Rotary District 6630 4 Way Test Speech Contest to be held at Aurora HS. Jake was the runner up at our contest, Jenna will represent our club at the District contest.
You will want to arrive early for the meeting this week. We will be having a breakfast buffet. The club will be sponsoring the buffet, but donations of $5.00 per person will be accepted to defer its cost-payable to Barberton Rotary Club if you are writing a cheque.
This weeks speaker is the 4 Way Test Speech Contest. Speakers from Manchester and Norton High Schools will be participating on the contest by presenting a speech to our club.The purpose of the speech is to solve an ethical problem using the principles of the Four Way Test. The ethical problem to be solved should be something from the speaker's personal experience or general knowledge. There are no restrictions regarding the choice of topic as long as it is not blatantly offensive. Each one of the four parts of the Four Way Test should be addressed during the speech. The winner of the contest will get to represent our club at the District 6630 4 Way Test Speech Contest to be held April 2nd at Aurora High School.
The Barbertonopoly sales team met following last weeks meeting and discussed our sales efforts of the various spots on the board and board pieces. Also discussed was targeted sales ideas.

Barberton 125 Anniversary Celebration-Founders Day is March 23

The meeting was called to order by club president, Tom Craig. Announcements were given & Happy Bucks collected. Club Service VP Selena Myers reminded club members of events occurring on Friday, the 26 in Downtown Barberton as well as our club social activity at Wolf Creek Winery.
Our speaker was Nick Wladyczak. Nick talked about the Shriners Hospitals for Children. He shared the history of the Shriners, and their purpose. He also talked about their major fundraising event of the year- the Shrine Circus. The circus is held in March at the Canton Civic Center. He indicated that volunteers are needed for the event as well as clowns.

Tom shared that the planning for our golf outing to be held June 3 at Chippewa Golf Club is moving forward. We will be presenting Safety Awards to a member of the police & fire departments in April.
Our speaker was John Hallsten. John shared his journey as an engineer to product designer/developer and innovator. He and his partner,Jeff Russell, an IT expert from Copley Township, have created a magnetic audio jack called MAGZET. John shared the process of product developed How to help bring the invention to market, they launched a fundraising campaign at Kickstarter.com. A link also can be found at www.magzet.com, with additional product details. They set a goal of $294,000 by May 1; they have collected more than $122,000 in pledges to date. Although they did not reach their Kickstarter campaign goal they are using the knowledge obtained from the process to move forward with future products.

Our speaker was to be Jason Day,Hope for Honduran Children, and Jason will be rescheduled for a meeting later in the Rotary year. Nick Wladyczek shared news of the Shrine Circus that will be March 18-20, a fun time for the whole family. Upcoming club events include the cooking with wine event on Friday, February 26 at Wolf Creek Winery. A few spots remain for the class. In March there will be a Mystery Dinner-Friday, March 11 at the Masonic Lodge.

The remainder of the meeting was an Assembly Meeting, club members in attendance discussed Barbertonopoly. Laura Thomas had a display of the board and the club members shared suggestions of who to offer advertising, and sales opportunities. Shared was a pre sign up at Founders Day. The next committee meeting for Barbertonopoly will be with in the next 3 weeks. We plan on ordering 1000 games to be sold at $25 each. The theme will be Barberton history in honor of the cities 125 anniversary. The box cover will feature historic Barberton pictures.
Selena sent out some email reminders regarding available speaking spots for this Rotary year. We have had some interesting speakers, so let's keep it up. Be sure to invite friends, neighbors and prospective Rotarians to our social event at Wolf Creek. Let's fill the remaining open spots for this outing.

The date for the District 6630 4 Way Test Speech Contest was shared in an email from District 6630 Governor Cheryl Warren. The event will be held on Saturday April 2nd 2016 at the Aurora High School in Aurora, OH. Doors Open at 8am, and anyone can attend. The cost is $20 per person and includes breakfast. Our club 4 Way Test Speech Contest is scheduled for the March 17 meeting.

Todd thanked club members Don Kaser and Denny Liddle for attending the recent District Grants Seminar. If our club makes the designated amount of Rotary Foundation donations we will be able to apply for District Grants.
Our speaker was Rotary Foundation Chair, Todd Wallace. Todd handed out each Rotarians' Foundation donation report. Todd indicated the report is available on both the individual and club level at the Rotary.org website. Our member packets also included forms we could complete to contribute to the Foundation. Club members have until the end of June to contribute to the RI Fdn for the contribution to count towards giving in this Rotary year-2015/2016.
T Wallace is our speaker at this weeks meeting. Todd will be sharing the ins and outs of the Rotary Foundation. Selena recently sent out an email indicating a few spots still remain to participate in the cooking with wine event at Wolf Creek Winery on February 26. Don Kaser and PE Denny Liddle attended the Grant Management Seminar on Monday, January 25.

Tom said we need to have 2 club members attend in order for our club to be able to apply for grants in the 2016/2017 Rotary year. Speaking of District Grants, Tom indicated the club needs to investigate the status of the grant for Play Attention. Former club member Kim Buehler had indicated the grant had been awarded to the club.
Vic Myers shared that the winner of the Barberton 125th Anniversary Logo contest would be awarded on the 22nd, and there would be a presentation by the Mayor. The winners would then be on display at Nine Muses Gallery.
Our speaker was Patti Weber, the Executive Director of Love an Angel Foundation. Patti shared the special needs of individuals born with this genetic disorder. It is a rare disorder that affects 1 of 12-20k live births.

Joe and George invited our club to participate in the upcoming Chili Open, to be held Saturday, February 6 at Hale Farm 7 Village. It is the 26th year of the event that benefits Akron Rotary Camp for Children with Special Needs.
Club member Denny Liddle shared news of the recent committee meeting for the Barbertonopoly board game. He discussed the profit points depending on the number of games sold. Our next step is forming a sales committee to sell ads. The club will place the order for the games by July so we can begin selling them in September.
Our speaker was Mark Bowles. Mark co-authored Just Keep Rowing with Katie Spotz. Just Keep Rowing shares the lessons Katie learned on her journey as the youngest person to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She traveled more than 3000 miles on her 70 day journey. Katie Spotz is from Mentor Ohio and is an endurance athlete and safe water activist. A portion of the proceeds from Just Keep Rowing will support the mission of partner, h2o for life (www.h2oforlifeschools.org)-to engage youth in service learning that support clean water projects for schools around the world. Co-author Mark Bowles is also an Ohioian. He is a Professor of History at American Public University System. He is the author of 14 books, including three college textbooks.
Mark shared that nearly 1 billion people lack access to clean water.
Tom's Rotary year is in its second half and Denny is attending pre PETS and planning on his trip to Columbus for PETS(President Elect Training Sessions.
You will want to come early to get the best seat for viewing. Our speaker for our meeting this week will be co-author Mark Bowles. He will be discussing the book he wrote with Katie Spotz. Katie is the youngest person to row across the Atlantic Ocean and she was a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar studying Entrepreneurship at the University of London. Copies of their book will be available for purchase after our meeting.

Our club's 4 Way Test Speech Contest will be held at the March 17th meeting. The location and the date for the District 6630 contest is still to be determined, but the District 6630 calendar shows the event to be in April of this year.

The meeting was called to order by club president, Tom Craig. Our speaker was fellow Rotarian, Rev. Ralph Young. Announcements were made: Rev Vic Myers shared that the award for Barberton's 125th Anniversary logo contest will be awarded at the half time of the January 22, 2016 Magics Basketball Game. The club members will have a chance to share their ideas for the clubs direction at the planning meeting for the second half of the Rotary Year. Our next club meeting, on January 7.
Rev Young shared he has been a Rotarian for 53 years, having joined in 1962 when he was a pastor in W. Va. Rev Young encouraged club members to make a difference in the world- feed the poor, heal the sick and welcome the stranger in your midst. He also shared some of his favorite Yogiisms:the future ain't the same as it used to be.

This is our last club meeting of the year, and also our last meeting at the Green Diamond. Effective January 7, 2016, the club will be meeting at Thanos Restaurant located at 71 5th St Se, Barberton, OH 44203.
The meeting was called to order by club president, Tom Craig. Guests were recognized and included Margaret Palisin and Elissa Young. Tom shared some of the topics discussed at the monthly board meeting. Effective January 7 the club will be meeting at Thanos Restaurant on 5th St SE. Rotary was founded as a networking group that moved from business to business for meetings and our club will continue that tradition. Tom also shared that the board voted to make a donation of $600 to Barberton Area Community Ministries (BACM) for the purpose of holiday help for two families. The club also plans on adopting a family for the holidays. The club will make a monetary donation towards gift cards for the parents and provide gifts for the children based on a submitted wish list. Club members can bring the gifts to our next meeting.
Treasurer Vic Myers shared that he and fellow club members Selena Myers and Julianne Bedel are on the committee planning the celebration of the City of Barberton's 125 th anniversary. Included is a competition for Barberton HS students to design the 125 Anniversary Celebration logo and slogan. The Barberton Rotary Club is the competition sponsor with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes to be awarded to the winners.
Our social event on Saturday, Dec. 5 to Magical Theatre's Cinderella with a reception at Casa Del Ranchero was well attended and enjoyed by all.
Our speakers were the team of Shelly Habegger and Elissa Young challenging our club to Christmas trivia and sharing some fun uses of QR codes.

VP of Club Service, Selena Myers reminded the club of our upcoming social event-attending Cinderella at the Magical Theatre with a reception at Casa Del Ranchero. Selena advised there were still a couple of tickets left if any members and guests were interested in attending.
The Magical Singers entertained the club with a medley of songs for the holiday season. The singers include male and female students from grades 9-12.

The meeting was called to order by Club President, Tom Craig. Tom reminded board members of the upcoming meeting on November 10 and its location of the Barberton Schools Adm Building. Treasurer Vic Myers shared the results of our Reverse Raffle & Silent Auction: the event net, $11,457.50. Also, the Silent Auction net $2870, games net $985, side boards $1300. VP of Club Service, Selena Myers passed around the event sign up sheet for the December 5th performance of Cinderella at Magical Theatre.
Other upcoming events discussed: The Rotary District 6630 Arts Auction will be held on Sunday, November 15th at the Hilton. The next club planning meeting will be Monday, November 16 at Stark State at noon. We have open club speaking dates starting in January.
Our speaker was Todd Wallace. Todd challenged the club to Trivia that included: Barberton History, our club history, things we should know and if we were smarter than a 5th Grader.

Several club members have sent their feedback indicating how they would improve the event and/or what they enjoyed. There is still time to share, the results will be summarized and brought to the next Board meeting and event wrap up meeting.
We have a fun program this week-the Todd and Nick Trivia. Last years contest was a blast- no pressure guys to top yourselves this year.
The club meeting on October 29th was the Barberton Rotary Foundation Annual Reverse Raffle. The 2015 theme was Fall Fantasy and the event was held at Guy's Party Center. Guests were encouraged to wear the jerseys or sports wear of their favorite team. As the event was near Halloween guests enjoyed treats in addition to Guy's hors d'oevres. The Reverse Raffle & Silent Auction is one of two major fund raising events of the Barberton Rotary Foundation. The other event is the Royal H Wood Memorial Golf Outing held in May.
The Barberton Rotary Club and its Foundation have supported Barberton City Schools with their donation to the construction of the playground for children with special needs and with learning tools such as Play Attention. The Barberton Rotary Club and its Foundation make ongoing donations to the Magical Theatre as well as have made a $20,000 pledge its Restore the Magic Capital Campaign. Co-Producing Directors Holly Barkdoll and Dennis O'Connell were among the event attendees and received the $4000 donation that is part of the $20,0000 pledge.
The events attendees enjoyed dinner and games in addition to the Silent Auction and Reverse Raffle Drawing. The early results indicate the event net is $11,377.

Ruth Kaser shared she was happy as the Lil' Eddy and the Boilermakers band,(in which Rotarian Don Kaser plays trombone), will be playing at Domenic's Pub in Cuyahoga Falls on Halloween.
Ruth and president Tom Craig reminded club members our Reverse Raffle & Silent Auction will be held next Thursday, October, 29th at Guy's Party Center. Club members were urged to sell their remaining event tickets and to take their baskets for the Silent Auction to the Lake Anna YMCA. The club will be presenting Dennis O'COnnell and Holly Barkdoll with a cheque for $4000 at our event. The $4000 is part of our $20,000 pledge to the Magical Theatre Restore the Magic Capital Campaign.
Treasurer Vic Myers shared our club completed our pledge of $1000 to the Lake Anna YMCA Scholarship Program with our payment of $250.00. Lake Anna YMCA Executive Director, Jim Sawin thanked the club for the donation as the Scholarship Fund enables individuals and families to enjoy the benefits of the Y who would otherwise not be able to afford it.

Our speaker was Tom Harnden. Tom is on the Leadership Team of the Magical Theatre renovation project. Tom shared the progress of the project- some of the before and after photos. The club then had the opportunity to take a tour of the theatre.

This week at the Barberton Rotary-includes a road trip!
The meeting was called to order by club president, Tom Craig. Guests were recognized and included Ryan Cornell and Josh Watson from B&W. Tom reminded club members our Reverse Raffle & Silent Auction is closing in-we will need to know committed tickets for a head count for the event. The silent auction basket assembly party will be held on Tuesday, October 27 at 7 at the Lake Anna Y in Jim Sawin's office.
Our speakers were Ryan Cornell, Public Relations and Media at B&W and Josh Watson, Boiler Process Engineer. Ryan and Josh shared some of the history of B& W in Barberton as well as what new and exciting projects in which the company is involved. They spoke of the Waste Energy Facility that opened in June of this year in Palm Beach Florida. The facility is built, designed and operated by B&W. It generates electricity for 40k holmes, and has reduced the land fill volume by 90%. The plant is one of 89 operating in the US. A considerable amount of the design & engineering work was done in Barberton.

Ruth Kaser reminded club members of the upcoming Reverse Raffle & Silent Auction at Guy's on October 29th. She shared there would be a raffle committee meeting after our morning meeting. Tom introduced Jasen Sokol who will be share the MC duties during the Reverse Raffle with Carl Bako. Ruth asked club members to sell tickets, bring in auction baskets and sign- up to volunteer for the event.
Our speaker was Steve Farnsworth. Steve Farnsworth, Interim Director for the Four Cities Compact will talked about the programs offered at the 4 participating schools : Barberton, Norton, Wadsworth and Copley High Schools. Steve shared that in Career Tech students have opportunities to earn work place credentials and college credits. He also talked about the new opportunities available thanks to the SME Prime Foundation. A focus on manufacturing at Barberton H.S. with Machine Tech, Wadsworth HS with Web Programming, and Engineering Design.
The events list has been updated to include a PARTY! A basket making party to assemble items donated for our Silent Auction into baskets. The party is at 7 pm at Jim's place-the Lake Anna YMCA.

Treasurer Vic Myers reported on the Tons of Taters fund raising event during MumFest. Vic shared our net for the event was $4107. Club members and all volunteers were thanked for their help in making the event a success. Vic also requested all ticket monies for the Reverse Raffle & Silent Auction be turned in by the October 15th meeting.
Countdown to the Reverse Raffle and Silent Auction on October 29th at Guy's Party Center. Jim Sawin shared that as of this past weekend he had a total of 2 baskets for the Silent Auction. Now is the time to drop off your basket or basket contents. There will be a basket making party -date to be announced. The purpose of the party will be to gather the various individual donations to make a basket of at least $50 value, and to assemble into a basket items that were donated by person or persons who do not feel they are basket skilled. So whether you have one gift certificate , a box full of items, or you have a basket prepared for the auction, please drop it off to Jim at the Lake Anna YMCA.
Tickets, most if not all of the tickets have been distributed. A separate email will be sent with an alphabetical listing of last years attendees. The volunteer sign up will be passed around at the meeting.
We will be having a meeting to plan the Reverse Raffle after our regular meeting to confirm the menu, advise seating, volunteers and ticket sales.

Our speaker Justin Chesnic shared news of upcoming ODOT road projects including 31st St, Wooster Road, and Route 18. Justin said that the long range forecast is calling for a milder winter and recommended monitoring the ODOT website for construction warnings.

Our club presented Lisa McLean with a check for $500, representing our repeat sponsorship of the MumFest to be held, September 26 and 27th. Lisa thanked the club for the donation and shared that this year marks the 25th year for Mum Fest.
Our speaker was Cheryl Warren, the 2015/2016 Rotary District 6630 Governor. Cheryl has been member of the Akron Rotary Club since 1995. She talked of her goals for our Rotary Club and she shared some updates regarding Rotary's goal of polio eradication. Rotary is close to eliminating the second human disease in history after smallpox, with a 99 percent reduction in polio cases worldwide since 1985, when Rotary launched its PolioPlus program. In 1988, Rotary spearheaded the creation of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative with the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Polio eradication remains Rotary’s top priority. To date, Rotary has contributed more than US$1.3 billion and countless volunteer hours to help immunize more than two billion children against polio in 122 countries. Currently, Rotary is working to raise $35 million per year through 2018 for polio eradication, which will be matched 2 to 1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

8. 1,736 Shelter Box its in partnership with IOM from Dubai are due to be sent on third charted flight. Date of arrival TBD.
Please be reminded that the destruction is totally overwhelming and it is always a complex process getting items through customs. The SB office staff told me that they have been flooded with request for assisting those in Nepal and that they are doing everything possible to respond to Rotarians, Rotary Clubs, friends of Rotary, Corporations and others as soon as possible. In addition, our manufactures have been put on notice asking them to help respond and ramp up their activities in getting SB contents to us. Unfortunately, it is estimated that there will be a six to eight window to provide some assistance in some of the more remote regions due to the imminent threat of monsoon season, which will mean that certain targeted communities will become the priority for Shelter Box assistance. Further it is reported that 8.1 million people are reported to be in need of humanitarian assistance. with hundreds of thousands of people sleeping outdoors in makeshift shelters. Thunderstorms are in the forecast, mountain snows are melting and the monsoon season is fast approaching which lead to the growing risk of landslides and flash flooding will add to the challenges for rescue and relief teams. Currently, there are 12 Shelter Box Response Team members working in Nepal. Special thank you to Rotary District 6630 Rotarians and all Rotarians through out the world for help those in time of need. This event is one of two that our Rotary Foundation depends on for our scholarships and our pledge to the Magical Theatres Capital Campaign. Club V.President of Vocational Service and Principal of Barberton Elementary School East, Kim Buehler introduced our academic scholarship recipients: Emily Dunkler from Barberton High School and Morgan Schaber from Manchester High School. Our scholarship recipient from Norton High School, is Alison Rohner .
Our speaker was John Thielenhaus. John Thielenhaus is an author of a daily devotional book, Moments with the Master.

The upcoming year expenditures for Barberton Rotary Foundation include $4000 to the Magical Theatre, $4000 in scholarships, and over $3000 in annual community donations.
VP of Vocational Service, Kim Buehler shared the results of the Rotary District 6630 4 Way Test Speech Contest. Kim said our club winner, Stephanie Smith did well, however she did not win the district contest. The results of the contest will be available on the District 6630 site.
Secretary Bruce May passed out the updated Barberton Rotary Club information flyers. They include the information that our clubs mission has been the assistance of children with special needs since 1924 when it was founded by M.S. Yoder and U.L.Light.
Nick shared news from the recent club board meeting. The board approved the member ship application of Jim Sawin, the Executive Director of the Lake Anna YMCA. He will be inducted as a new club member at an upcoming meeting. The board also set a date for our next social activity at Dusty's Landing -Friday, May 1. The club will provide the main dish and members are encouraged to invite potential new club members and to bring a side dish.
Our speaker was the induction ceremony for our new club member Laura Thomas. Laura is the new owner of Spencer Tax Service.

The meeting was called to order by club president, Nick Wladyczak. Guests were recognized and included Rotary District 6630 Governor Elect, Cheryl Warren. Our club and Foundation proposed budgets for the 2015/2016 Rotary year were distributed for review to the club members. Our club board will meet next Tuesday, April 14th at 7:30 at Kave. Nick also reminded club members of Magical Theatres need for assistance this weekend Saturday and Sunday to help remove the building contents. Rick Fisher announced that we have received a donation of a 4 some at Fairlawn Country Club as a prize for our Golf Outing Raffle. The raffle tickets will be printed and distributed, club members are encouraged to sell many tickets.
Cheryl Warren shared news from the District. Our District Conference,the District 6630 Conference of Clubs, will be held April 24-26th at the Double Tree Inn, in Independence Ohio. Registration, and a schedule of the weekend can be found at the District 6630 website. Cheryl also urged members to examine their donation amounts to Every Rotarian Every Year as for our club to continue to qualify for District grants and RI matching grants the club needs to average at least $35 per member in donations to the RI general Fund, with the desired donation being $100 per member.

The club is the speaker this week as we will be having an Assembly Meeting. We use Club Assembly meetings to share Rotary with our new members, discuss projects and plan fund raising activities. We hope you will be able to join us to share your input at this meeting.
The review of the calendar of events shows the District 6630 Four Way Test Speech Contest will be held this Saturday, April 11th at the Aurora High School in Aurora, OH. The event will open it's doors to allow students, friends and Rotarians to enter the building at 8 a.m. Registration will not officially begin until 8:10 a.m. If you are interested in attending the event, please contact Kim Buehler, VP of Vocational Service, or Nick.

Nick announced our grant was approved, we need to now apply by May 15 and Kim Buehler will be completing the application. Nick also shared that a sign up list is being passed around for assisting the Magical Theatre in their moving of equipment. Help days are April 11 and 12th from 9-5, help is appreciated even if it is only an hour.
The Save the Date cards for our golf outing on June 5 have been prepared, Vic Myers requested club members to assist the club in updating our mailing list. Also, we are still in need of an main prize for the raffle- Rick Fisher was requested to be the person to contact Dan Pohl for the donation of the 4 some at Fairlawn County Club. Vic also reminded the club members of the upcoming library levy fund raising event to be held at Block 7. The levy is issue 9 on the ballot in May.

Nick said the next board meeting of the club will be held on Tuesday, April 14 at Kave at 7:30.
Jason Neihaus shared some of the new things coming and happening at Summa. He will be a club speaker in July. He restated Summa's commitment to the community and although some of the contracted specialty care will be leaving their facility they are not closing their IP services. He also shared they will be looking at their facility plan and are committed to making investments in renovations and construction. They would like to expand but are land locked.
Our other speaker was Margaret Palisin the new Executive Director of BACM. She shared that last year BACM served 16% of the combined population of Barberton and Norton, BACM is a member of the Akron Food Bank. Margaret also shared some of the impossible choices faced by the food insecure in their daily lives, and how BACM helps.

Nick shared that he and Don Kaser will be attending the District 6630 Grants Training Seminar that will be held March 24.
Dennis O'Connell shared news of a fund raising event for the Magical Theatre : a Trivia Night Fundraiser. More information can be found on the theatres website under upcoming events. Also,hands will be needed to help empty the building that houses the theatre so renovation can begin. The work dates include: March 31, April 1,2,11,12. A sign up sheet will be prepared.
Our speakers Patti Cleary and Shawna Jones presented the State of the Schools. Shawna Jones, the new treasurer shared the financials that included the schools have refunded a portion of the 2008 bond series saving the taxpayers money. Also, they were under budget in construction leaving permanent improvement dollars for facility improvements.
Patty Cleary shared that the Board of Ed has put together a strategic plan for the system. The process was started in 2014, and includes a mission statement, beliefs and 5 goal areas.

Greetings Rotarians. Our speakers this week will present the "State of our schools": Mrs. Patti Cleary, Superintendent and Mrs. Shawna Jones, the Treasurer of the Barberton City Schools.
A chance for fun, and Rotary fellowship awaits you.....if you attend the District 6630 4 Way Test Speech competition with the winning Manchester High Schools Student. Our club contest will be held at our March 26th meeting. The winner will compete at the district level. Should you desire to attend you would be going to Aurora High School. The doors will open at 8 a.m. for registration. Registration will end promptly at 8:45 a.m. Please plan to arrive early since late arrivals will not be allowed entrance.There will be a total of 15 judges, all Rotarians! Five rooms will be used with 3 judges in each room for the first round of speeches. Contestants will be asked to proceed to their assigned rooms after a continental breakfast and announcements at 9 a.m. Speakers will be asked to remain in the rooms after their speeches until dismissed. This will ensure that all contestants are presenting to a full room. After a brief 15 minute break, everyone will proceed to the large auditorium for the final presentations. The finalists will be called up to the stage to deliver their presentations at random. After all speeches have been delivered, the judges will be dismissed to get their lunches and convene in a private room for voting. Everyone else will enjoy lunch in the main cafeteria while they await the results. Nick shared the District Grants Training Seminar that was scheduled for last week was canceled due to adverse weather conditions, however it will be rescheduled. We need to have at least 2 club members attend the training to qualify to apply for a grant for the coming Rotary year.
Birthdays and guests were recognized. Our guests included Rotarians from the Fairlawn and Akron Rotary Clubs. The major fundraising event of the Fairlawn Rotary Club will be held on Saturday, March 28 at the Fairlawn Country Club.The Fairlawn Club will use the event proceeds to support their clubs projects.
Happy Dollars were collected. Treasurer Vic Meyers reminded the club that the Happy Dollars collected this Rotary year will be applied to our $1000 pledge to annual campaign of the Lake Anna YMCA.
Our speaker was Jim Sawin, the new director of the Barberton YMCA. Jim talked about the 3 focus areas of the YMCA: youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. He discussed the Day Camps offered to the youth, the classes, exercise programs and wellness coaching, the community garden, and all of the people able to participate at the YMCA because of the Annual Giving Campaign.
We did not have a morning meeting last Thursday, February 19. Instead, we had an evening membership event on Friday, February 20th. Thank you to Denny Liddle for organizing the event. It was well attended, with plenty of great food and fun company. I had a great time when are we going to do this again-was a frequently heard comment from the attendees.

In March 2014 India, once deemed the most difficult place to end polio, was declared polio-free, making the entire Southeast Region polio-free.As of February 11, Africa had no new cases of wild poliovirus in six months, though the continent must mark three full years without a new case to be officially declared polio-free by WHO. Until polio is stopped in the remaining endemic areas, all countries must maintain high levels of surveillance and immunization rates to rapidly detect any importation of the poliovirus and minimize its impact. Now that 99 percent of the world’s population lives in regions certified polio-free, the goal of eradication is closer than ever.

Nick announced that the donations from our club members for Happy Dollars will be given to the Annual Campaign of the Lake Anna YMCA. He also reminded the club of our membership event to be held next Friday, February 20th at 6pm at Dusty's Landing. Our speaker was Barberton Public Library Director, Julianne Bedel. Julianne shared information regarding the library levy that will be on the ballot in May. The levy is both a renewal as well as an increase. The library needs the renewal as well as the increase due to a variety of factors. The State of Ohio's Public Library Fund, which provides a significant portion of the library total revenue has decreased. The operating levy accounts for 36% of the total revenue. The library annual visits are up, borrowing is up, but the financial support is down. The money from the levy along with state funding is used to support the overall operations of the library.
The club presented Julianne and Rev. Vic Myers, the Co-Chair person of the Levy Committee, with a donation of $100 for the library levy.

Don Kaser and Vic Myers spoke regarding the Barberton Library Levy. The levy committee is having a fund raising event at the Green Diamond Grille & Pub on Tuesday, February 24. Rotarian Juliane Bedel will be the speaker at next weeks meeting regarding the upcoming levy.
Carl Bako introduced our speaker, Judge Elinore Marsh Stormer and told of serving on the Citizens Advisory Council in 2013 with Larry Okolish. Judge Stormer discussed some of the programs offered by the Probate Court. She shared that there are over 200 programs that include the Help Desk, the Senior Visitor Program, Volunteer Guardian Program and Advanced Directives. Training is required and provided for the Senior Visitor Program, and the Volunteer Guardian Program and new volunteers are welcomed.In addition to a packet with some of the court programs the club members were given a worksheet for Personal Records and Important Documents. Judge Stormer discussed the importance of advanced directives, to not only complete the worksheet but share with family its existence and location.

The club discussed the Scholarship Awards ceremony and if we would be able to have the ceremony at Summa Barberton Hospital again this year. Denny Liddle offered to speak with the hospital board members to see if it could be arranged.
Don Kaser shared the result of the meeting he attended with Tom Craig and the Fairlawn Rotary Club regarding possible future international projects involving both clubs.

Club Treasurer Vic Myers suggested we send $50 to the Esther Ryan Shoe Fund and $50 to the Magical Theatrebased on the family wishes in his obituary. The club agreed and the memorials will be sent as voted.
The upcoming Grant Management Training sessions were discussed. Our club will need to have at least two members attend one of the training sessions to qualify to apply for a District Grant in May. We have utilized the Rotary District 6630 Matching Grants for several of the clubs local and international projects. Club President Nick Wladyczak and International VP Don Kaser plan on attending the February training session.
Nick invited club members to attend the South Summit Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours that was to be held Thursday evening at the Coventry location of Snap Fitness. The After Hours event will be co sponsored by Barberton Rotary Club member Attorney Bruce May and Snap Fitness.
Nick also asked club members to mark their calendars and spread the word regarding our upcoming social event at Dusty's Landing on Friday, February 20th. Fliers for the event will be available soon.

He also advised there will be a planning meeting for the Rotary Club of Barberton Fdn, 12th Annual Royal H Wood Memorial Golf Outing, to be held June 5, 2015. The planning meeting will be held after the monthly club board meeting in February.
VP of Community Service, Brian Bidlingmyer advised he had raffle tickets for the Akron Rotary Clubs, Chili Open. This will be the 25th year for their event to be held on February 7th, proceeds to benefit the Rotary Camp for Special Needs Children at Rex Lake. Nick shared that volunteer opportunities may also be available for our club members.
Nick read a thank you note from the Lily Bike Project. Our club donated $815 towards a specially modified bicycle.
Reverse Raffle Chair, Ruth Kaser advised the date and location have been reserved for the club event. It will be held at Guy's Party Center on October 29, 2015.

Selena Meyers reminded the club of our road trip the the Barberton Satellite Center of Stark State. We can look forward to a tour of the facility and a welding demonstration.

We will be adopting 2 families for Christmas. Nick will be sharing the gift details with the club. Members are asked to bring items for the 2 families to the December 18th meeting. The club has also donated towards an adaptive bike for a little girl.

Rotary is the oldest and the largest of the service clubs. It was founded in 1905 by Paul Harris in Chicago. They called it Rotary as the weekly meeting location place was rotated between the members offices. Rotary's Polio Plus program started in 1988 has seen and celebrated the cases of polio in the world plummet from 350,000 to less than 250. Polio remains active in 3 countries in the world. Rotary causes: promoting peace, fighting diseases, clean water, saving moms & kids, supporting education, and growing local economics.

Our speaker was Rev. Ralph Young. Rev. Young shared he has been a Rotarian for 51 years. His topic was "Random but not totally disconnected ideas" He talked about this past week-his thought process preparing to speak at our club. He also spoke of giving thanks, and where he did and did not see God.

Club treasurer Vic Myers discussed recent club donations. The club again is a sponsor at the Greynolds Classic. This year's donation of $250 brings our total donations to date of $2500 to the Greynolds Classic.
The club also discussed upcoming scheduled programs. The club will be meeting at Stark State, Barberton Satellite on December 18. Satellite Coordinator and club member Selena Myers is organizing our upcoming tour. The Barberton High School Magic Singers will be the December 11th program at the Green Diamond.

Vic also shared recent donations made by the club: $825 to United Way of Summit County. Club member Brenda Farrell represented accepted our donation on behalf of United Way. The club also made a $250 donation to the Greynolds Classic, $500 to the MumFest, and $100 to Stewarts Caring Place in memory of Fred Fries. Fred Fries was a prior club member and past Barberton Rotary Club President.

Our speaker was Sarah Hays with the Barberton Public Library. Sarah is the Local History Librarian at the library. Sarah's topic was Chief Hopocan and the Ohio Tribes. Chief Hopocan was a Delaware Indian and was known as Captain Pipe. The Delaware Indians were an old tribe that were forced west into Ohio as the country became populated and the Indian tribes were removed from their lands. Ohio joined the union in 1803 and by 1829 the Delaware were forced to release the rest of their land in Ohio. The chief did not live to see this having died in 1794.
This October marks the 100th anniversary of Dr. Salk's birth. I (Ruth) use to work for a heath insurance company. We still had polio lines of coverage showing on the hard copies some of our long standing group medical plans we handled when I joined the company in the late 70's.
When the vaccine was introduced in the US in the 1950's polls indicated that polio was one of the nation's two greatest fears, second only to the fear of atomic war. In the 1952 polio epidemic, 58,000 cases were reported, with 3,145 deaths and 21,269 instances of permanent, disabling paralysis. Globally, polio paralyzed or killed up to half a million people every year.
When the 166 member states of the World health Assembly unanimously set the goal of global polio eradication in in 1988 many in the world called the goal impossible.
Today, we are "this close" to the goal with only a few hundred cases of polio reported each year, and just three remaining endemic countries. We are on track to achieve full eradication by 2018 if we keep up the momentum that has brought us this far.

Barberton City Schools will be holding a strategic planning focus group that evening for parents and community members --Thursday, September 25th at the Active Adult Center in Barberton from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. If you know any parents or community members who you think would like to attend, please let them know.
The meeting was called to order by club president, Nick Wladyczak. Treasurer Vic Myers announced there were only 42 days until our Reverse Raffle & Silent Auction. Our Barberton Rotary Foundation has committed $20,000 towards the Magical Theatres capital campaign. This pledge coupled with other committed projects to East and West Elementary Schools of Play Attention add to the importance of a successful event.
The sign up for the Tons of Taters Fundraiser during Mumfest was passed around. We still have a few volunteer slots open for someone to join in on the fun the weekend of September 27-28th.
Nick reminded the club we will have a meeting on September 25.
Our speaker was Donae Ceja the VP of Community Impact for United Way. Donae shared the focus of United Way. Untied Way focuses on the building blocks for a good life: education, income and health.
The Club Board of Directors met this morning. One of the items discussed were the Tons of Taters event needs. Event Chair Denny Liddle advised that Saturday from 4-6 has no volunteers. Other slots have 3 Rotarians and could use a 4th. Please contact Denny if you are able to help at this fun event.
Also discussed was the Reverse Raffle. Please continue to bring in your sold ticket stubs and money, and see Ruth Kaser if you should need additional tickets. Also, we will be in need of baskets, donations of gift certificates, and items of $50 or more in value for our Silent Auction to be held at the Raffle. Speaking of sign ups-the Raffle could use some additional volunteers at the event. Please see Ruth Kaser to volunteer at this fun event.
Clean Water-unless a pipe breaks and a street floods do you think about the age and condition of our water supply system. Our speaker this week will be either Terry Palmer the Manager of the Barberton Water Plant or Jim Stender the Utilities Director.
Nick called the meeting to order, announcements were made and guests were recognized. Upcoming club events include the Tons of Taters fund raising event at the MumFestival on September 27,28 and the Reverse Raffle and Silent Auction to be held Wednesday, October 29 at Prime 93.
Our speaker was Brenda Farrell. Brenda shared some brain teasers and quizzed us on our Ohio facts.
Club president, Nick called the meeting to order. Our guests included Rotary District 6630 Governor Mike Davanzo and his wife Judy. The upcoming Mum Festival was discussed, some volunteer opportunities still remain for Saturday and Sunday. Rotarians Tom Craig and Dave Taylor will represent Rotary in the canoe race.
Reverse Raffle Chair passed out event tickets and flyers to the club members. The event sign up sheet was also circulated.
Our speaker was Rotary District 6630 Governor Mike Davanzo. Mike discussed some upcoming events in the district: RI End Polio Now Day at Bob Evans. Mike shared that Bob Evans will be making donation of 15% of sales to RI on October 23. There is a special event flyer to present at time of check out.
Mike also shared some of the goals of Rotary's 2014-2015 president Gary Huang: grow membership, increase giving in EREY, promote Rotary!
Club Meeting of August 27 with District Governor Mike Davanzo
We plan on passing out tickets and posters for our Reverse Raffle at this weeks meeting. The date of our event will be Wednesday, October 29. The proceeds for this event will be used by our Foundation for special projects for children with special needs as designated by our club. The event may be at the end of October but now is the time to sell the tickets, the sooner the event is a sell out we can concentrate on getting donations for the Raffle.
Club President Nick has signed up to have a speaker for this weeks meeting. Club members have signed up to get speakers for our meetings through October.
Our speaker list has filed through October! There will be additional opportunities after the Reverse Raffle, so if you are working on an idea for a speaker you will have your chance.
Bruce May will be our speaker this Thursday, and we may also be passing out the Reverse Raffle tickets and event flyers.
The meeting was called to order by past president, Todd Wallace. Todd reminded the club members in attendance of upcoming events of note: Thursday, August 7 is Rotary at the Rubber Ducks. Interested parties should see Critch. August 15-17 there are opportunities to meeting and greet the International Students coming to Akron University. Past President Todd Wallace was our program. Todd shared a Rotary quiz and some famous Rotarians. Todd shared that astronaut Frank Borman, carried the banner of the Rotary Club of Space Center with him to the moon on an Apollo 8 Lunar Mission in 1968
Rotary at the Rubber Ducks is this Thursday. We WILL have a morning meeting that day-we hope to pass out the Reverse Raffle tickets. Unknown at the writing of this bulletin is the name of our speaker. No one signed up at the meeting last week. Speaking opportunities remain for the next 2 Thursdays in August and September is wide open. Last year brought some interesting speakers and topics, let's try to equal or exceed last year Rotarians!

The 2014/2015 officers were inducted after a sumptuous dinner at the Galaxy restaurant. Past President Todd Wallace called the meeting to order to go over the years stats: we ended up with plus one membership in the club. We had one club member with 100% attendance of meetings in the year- Ruth Kaser. Happy Dollars were collected. Todd reminded club members the date and the theme have been sent for our Reverse Raffle to be held in the fall. Club Treasurer, Vic Myers reminded club members of our commitments this Rotary year and the need to have a successful fall fund raising event.

Our speaker was Jim Shimko, the program director for the Boy Scouts of America. Jim spoke of opportunities for the Barberton Rotary Club with Manatoc Scout Reservation. He shared that Camp Manatoc had 61,000 camper nights last year with 3000 kids attending summer camp. Camp Manatoc has 102 buildings on the 400 acres of property, most of them being built in the 1930's. The camps annual maintenance budget of $77,000 is primarily used for maintenance of the cabins. Service organizations such as Rotary have an opportunity to assist by adopting a building on the property, such as the Trading Post. Adoption includes landscaping, interior and exterior painting, and or staining.

Rotary Foundation Chair, Brenda Farrell reminded club members of our Every Rotarian Every Year donation due to the Rotary Foundation. Our club plans on having a local project this next Rotary year and the club members need to donate sufficient monies for our club to qualify to request a grant.
Our speaker was Chris McNight. Chris shared he is the Resource Development Director for United Way of Summit County. He helps businesses find ways to work with United Way. He indicated that in 2012 there were over 33.000 instances of services to Barberton people by United Way. Chris said that although the area has great need it is also very generous with donations. The Barberton Public Schools, for example raised more money per capita than any school system in Summit County.

The meeting was called to order by club president Todd Wallace. Happy Dollars were collected. Todd reminded club members door prizes will be needed for our June 6th golf outing. Hole sponsorships will again be offered for $50. Forms for the outing will be available at next weeks meeting.
Our speaker was Stew Buchanan. Stew is a past Rotary District 6630 Governor and Akron Rotary Club member. Stew came today to share about the Rotary Foundation and polio eradication. He advised India is now declared Polio free having been without a case for 3 years. However the disease is still active in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria.
The Rotary Foundation has helped Rotary Clubs launch sustainable projects around the world. Our own club has used the power of matching funds the foundation brings to purchase pediatric wheelchairs to be delivered in Mexico, to start a Microfinance bank in Togo, Aftrica. A clubs $12000 can be matched at the district level and by the Foundation to result in $42000 for a project. However clubs and club members need to donate every year to replenish the fund. Donations can be made online at the Rotary International website, or at the club level. Our club needs to average $25 or more per member per year to remain eligible to qualify for a project grant.
The club meeting of March 27, was called to order by President, Todd Wallace. Todd shared news of the golf committee meeting. Our annual golf outing- the Royal H. Wood Memorial Golf Outing benefiting area projects for children with special needs will be held Thursday, June 6 at Chippewa Golf Club in Doylestown. We will have raffle tickets at next weeks meeting, with this years raffle prizes including a foursome at Firestone Country Club, and an IPad Mini.
Tom Craig announced a membership event has been planned for May 29, it will be a potluck. Sign up for the event and dish selection will be forthcoming once the event location has been finalized.
President Elect, Nick Wladyczak announced the clubs fall fundraising event- the Reverse Raffle will be held Thursday, October 30 at Prime and it will be a costume affair.
Our scholarship awards ceremonies for Vocational Awards and Academic Scholarships will be held in May. Dates and locations are being finalized.
Brenda Farrell reminded club members to make their annual donations to Every Rotarian Every Year so our club remains grant eligible.
Our speaker was Nick Wladyczak and his topic the Shriner's. Nick shared the Tadmor Shrine Circus was held this past Friday, and early results show it was a success. The circus is the major fundraising event for the Tadmor Shrine. The Tadmor Shrine is part of Shriner's International. Their Transportation Units drove 47,000 miles last year transporting children under 18 and their families to Shrine hospitals. The transportation as well as the medical care, the family stay at the family apartments, and the follow-up is free. If a child under 18 needs medical care for a cleft lip & palate, burn care, orthopaedic, or a spinal cord injury the Shriner's can help.

Their club will be celebrating 100 years this year and is the parent club of the Barberton Rotary Club. The Barberton Rotary Club will be celebrating 80 years this year.

As part of my duties as president-elect. Our club has been asked to raise money for the local Food Bank. I'm asking for monetary donations for this project. If everyone could donate a monetary amount please let me know and it would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone can think of a food bank or homeless shelter besides the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank to donate to, I would accept those suggestions. I'm required to report by March 7th to our District Governor Elect.

The meeting was called to order by club president Todd Wallace. Happy Dollars were gathered. Todd reminded the club of the upcoming Family Fun Event on the 22nd and that volunteers, desserts and door prizes were needed. He also shared that Denny Liddle will be the chair of this years golf outing. A chair person for this years reverse raffle is still needed. Tom Craig shared that there were still open dates for speakers in March, April and May. Members and speakers can sign-up by contacting him either via Sign Up Genius or by email.
The next order of business was the induction of five new members : Janice Stephenson, Selena Myers, Julianne Bedel, Shelly Habbeger, and Jennifer Sutton. Jennifer was not present at the meeting. As membership chairperson, Ruth Kaser had the honor of passing out the new member packets to each incoming club member.

There are still available tickets for the event. We are asking club members to bring in addition to themselves the following: a dessert-like cookies or brownies and a door prize to be auctioned with a value of $10-15.

The meeting was called to order by club president, Todd Wallace. VP of Community, Tom Craig announced a Save the Date email has been sent out via Punch Bowl for our next club membership event to be held Thursday, January 23 at Red Horse Winery. The event will be a pot luck with members urged to invite prospective members and to bring a favorite dish. The event will be held from 5:30-7:30 PM.
Club Foundation Chair person, Brenda Farrell advised that today was the last meeting of 2013 that club members would be able to make a donation by check to the RI Foundation to have it count for 2013. Members not in attendance can make donation via the RI website.
Todd reminded club members our next meeting would be held January 9th. Our speaker was BRC Scholarship winner, Sofia Senderak. Sofia graduated this past year and is a 2013 scholarship recipient. Sofia shared her experiences as a freshman at Case Western Reserve University where she is majoring in Cognitive Science and Music.
Rotary Foundation month was November however, Foundation Chair Brenda Farrell reminded board members at todays meeting of our need to average $25 per member in our RI Foundation giving as one of the requirements of contintued participation in the grant process. Our speaker this week is Pastor Jennifer Olin-Hitt on maintaining focus on whats important during the Holiday Season . Bring a friend to the meeting- perhaps the guest that was unable to attend the recent Community Gathering. Also Tuesday, December 10th is Human Rights Day, the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that respect for human rights "is the fountation of freedom, justice and peace in the world."
Kudo's to the Rotarians and guests who braved the bracing winds and cold last Friday. Our club members rang the bell for the Salvation Army at the KMart at Magic City Plaza till 6pm that day and helped to make a difference in the lives of the needy.

The club presented United Way of Summit County with a donation of $750.00. Chris McKnight with United Way received the donation.

The foundation report for the month of January is in. Our district is making progress in reaching our goal of $160,00. As of this report we have contributed $89,653. On behalf of the district and all the people in our district and world community who will benefit from these donations, I do want to thank you for your generosity and continuing generosity.
