Chris was also our speaker at today's meeting. The name of his presentation was Stack the Deck. Stack the Deck was an exercise in seeing the differences of living in the world of the financially disadvantaged verses the middle class. The group was presented with differences in lifestyle, nutrition, housing, education and playing cards were awarded or taken based on economic class. At the end, the group was given the assignment of adding up the hand that was delt, converting it to income and seeing the result.
Chris also shared some of the following information during the exercise:
  • Jails and jail cells are calculated based on the number of persons that failed 3rd grade;
  • Almost 43% of single mothers live below the poverty line;
  • In Ohio 45% of black children live below the poverty line compared to 16% of white children;
  • There is only one agency in Summit County that provides temporary housing for families-the other support agencies are for males or females.
