Our speaker was Dr. Shelly Habegger, the Director of Curriculum for the Barberton City Schools.Dr. Habeggers presentation concerned poverty in America and its role in the success of our students.  She shared some information regarding the level of poverty in our school district. For a district to be considered a poverty district it has to be at 40% of the students receiving free or reduced lunches-Barberton is at 73%. When students are enrolled in kindergarten they are administered the Crawl test to determine their readiness for school. While 88% of the Hudson students were ready, 46% were ready in Barberton. Less than 30% of students in the bottom quarter of incomes enroll in a four-year school. Among that group-less than half graduate.

The driving forces of a person in poverty are survival, relationships and entertainment as opposed to work and achievement of the middle class. To help to understand the situation of the person in generational poverty and to help them break the cycle is important. She recommended reading A Framework for Understanding Poverty, a Cognitive Approach by Ruby K. Payne, Ph.D.
